Croatia

November 9, 2017

Recognize this place where your favorite television show has been filmed?  Of course, thanks to CGI, these original walls have been made even more dramatic for Game of Thrones, but they are incredibly scenic even without the television stars and special effects!

Recently, we had the opportunity to travel on Azamara Quest along the Adriatic Coast and visit the Dubrovnik area and the island of Hvar.  To see a little about our trip to Vukovar Croatia in 2014, click here.

Dubrovnik

The walled city of Dubrovnik in the Adriatic with the famous red terracotta roofs.

Dubrovnik is an incredible city...the Old City or Stari Grad is one of the best preserved walled cities in the world, it's a popular place to film television and movies set in walled kingdoms, and despite heavy shelling during the Siege of Dubrovnik in  1991-1992, this UNESCO Heritage Site has been repaired and restored.  To see what i might have looked like after the war, see the photo below with a map of all the damage done to the fortified city and our post about Vukovar, to see what it looks like where everything has not been repaired yet  (linked above)

The walls of the city

A map shows all the missile strikes from the Siege of Dubrovnik during the 1991-1992, the historic UNESCO Heritage site has been completely restored.

The Pile and Ploce Gates

Entrance to the city is via one of these two gates, inside the gates, an entire city grew up within the walls, with palaces and churches anchoring the civic life. Today, it stands largely as tourist destination, although laundry hanging from the upper floors of buildings indicate some people still love there.

The Stradun (Placa)

Another popular thing to do in Dubrovnik is walk through the Stari Grad (Old Town) along the Stradun (also known as the Placa) A guided tour helps put it all in perspective, but you can also use a guide book or audio guide to help navigate.  We were generously gifted a private tour for the day with driver and guide from our travel Agent, Jenny at Travel Beyond through the Signature Collection.  We met our guide, Bozidar and driver Luka at the pier, and they whisked us off in a late model Mercedes sedan. Even better than all that luxury, was the incredible knowledge and professionalism of our guide, Bozidar.

It's lovely place to just wander and explore, I wish we'd had more time to do that!  You can't really get lost in a completely walled city, when you hit a wall, turn around and head the other way! (click on any pghoto below to expand)

Walking the Walls

There are entrances to the walls at Sv. Spas, Sv. Ivan, and Sv. Luka.  You can buy a ticket at the ticket booths for 150 K ($23 at today's exchange rates) The trip completely around the city is just over a mile, but plan at least 2 hours to walk and enjoy the views.  Although there are stairs in places, it's not a big climb, with only 25 m of elevation, usually there aren't more than a dozen stairs in any place once you get up onto the walls. Anyone who can walk over a mile and take a few flights of stairs, can probably walk the walls comfortably, there are even a few spots to sit and rest along the way.

High Above the Stari Grad

If you have the opportunity, it's good to get up to the top of one of teh hills above the city.  This allows you to see the perfectly walled city from above, as well as see all the way to the border with Bosnia on a clear day!

Above Dubrovnik, even in October, snow could be seen in the mountains of Bosnia

RIT Croatia

We have a connection to Rochester Institute of Technology, and our daughter, and alumna, who was home house sitting for us, insisted we stop to see the Croatian Campus of RIT while we visited Dubrovnik.  We decided we would ask our private guide if we could make a stop at the campus just to see it.  What we didn't expect was that our guide would also be an alum of RIT!

It didn't take long for us to learn that he had in fact graduated from RIT with a degree in Tourism, Hospitality and Service Management program.  Of course, after getting an overview of the city from a high venue, we went back into the city and Bozidar took us to the RIT building where we had a little tour.  One of the wonderful benefits of having a private guide is the ability to customize our itinerary for our specific interests, which in this case also involved a photo op at a University we support!

Bozidar standing in front of his alma mater, and coincidentally, the alma mater of our daughter!

Cavtat

Not far from Dubrovnik is the small resort town of Cavtat with it's pretty parks by the beaches and historic Church of St Blais.  We spent the morning visiting the small walled coastal town and hiking along the pretty beach path because there was quite a bit of coastal fog and we wanted it to clear a bit before walking the Dubrovnik city walls.

Inside the walled village, there are many cafes and shops, two gentlemen enjoy a coffee on a cloudy Saturday morning.

A view out from the beaches of Cavtat, and St Blaise Church in Cavtat below (click on the picture to enlarge)

We were told that Cavtat is the place where the iconic red terracotta roofs were made, one tile at a time, traditionally molded on the thigh of the tile maker, which gives them their curve.

The trail along the beach also has a small demonstration garden of local agricultural products including these olives!  I never knew that both green and black olives grow on the same tree, the only difference is the level of ripeness!

One of the rocky beaches that line Cavtat, and attract beach goers in the summer.

We bid goodbye to Dubrovnik, enjoying the beautiful scenery as we sailed away.  If you visit via land, I suggest getting out on the ferries or taking a boat tour to enjoy the views of the city from the water.  Also the islands in the Adriatic have the best beaches in the country!

Sun sets on the Adriatic

Hvar

We visited Hvar Town on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic.

Like many of the places along the Adriatic, Hvar Town has been settled since ancient times, that means there is probably a walled castle somewhere.  In Hvar city looming over the coastal village is the Hvar Fortress.  Climbing up to the fortress is not for the feint of heart, with many steps between the coast and the entrance to to the fort. Fortunately, just when it seems like you've lost count of the stairs, the rest of the way up is a more gradual ramp with switchbacks!

Be sure to stop at one of the banks to change your Dollars or Euros before climbing, the fortress costs a couple of dollars to get in, but they accept Kuna.  There is an ATM at the fort, but you'll do better at the bank with fees.

The stairs leading to the fortress are narrow, uneven and steep! But the sites and views are worth the effort!

Azamara Quest from the walls of the fort, with Jerolim in the distance

Hvar Town

The coastal town is filled with cafes, shops and tourist agencies. The Cathedral of St Stephen sits in a square along with one of the oldest theaters in Europe.

To visit the islands out off the coast of Hvar Town, you can take a private water taxi over to the small island of Jerolim for better beaches. Unfortunately, our planned trip to see the islands was thwarted by a squall that blew in and the taxis weren't operating the day we were there.  There are also several travel agencies and tourist offices in Hvar Town where you can book excursions and stays on other parts of Hvar, including the the Stari Grad or old town on the other side of the island where there are also more beaches.

Slovenia

November 7, 2017

If the prices of the alpine regions of Italy or Switzerland seem out of reach...can we suggest Slovenia? If the big capitals of the alpine European countries are budget busters, the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is a beautiful, and affordable substitute!

We arrived in Slovenia on a cruise ship, in the Roman era port city of Kopor.  The country is small which allowed us to travel from the small coastal area to the alpine region in little more than an hour.  We hired a guide from Roundabout Travel, and customized our itinerary via email with the very helpful staff.  But with just a day to visit, we needed to prioritize our choices of what to see. Below is a partial list of things to see and do in Slovenia

Some Major Sites to see in Slovenia

-Medieval port city of Kopor
-Capital city ofLjubljana
-Caves created from the unique "karst" limestone geology in Slovenia (Postojna and Skocjan)   -Beaches in the Portoroz beach resort
-Lipinazzer Horses in Lipica
-Hike the mountains or visit a natural gorge, such as the Vintgar Gorge
-The Predjama Castle built into a natural cave
-The Alpine town of Bled with it's lake and castle                                                                                                   -Triglav National Parks                                                                                                                                               -Soca River Valley

Clearly, there is enough to do to fill a weeks vacation, but we only had a day!  Our Roundabout guide, Sanjin, arrived promptly at 8AM and we started our tour with a trip up a very modern highway to the Lake Bled resort area, which was very quiet during our early October visit, being past  the summer tourism season.

Lake Bled Resort Area and Bled Castle

Imagine a time when landowners had small villages of people working for them, they built huge walled palaces to protect their property and often hid inside the walls when marauders came through. This is the history of the Bled Castle.   Over the years, many wealthy people including communist leader, Tito, built villas along the shores of Lake Bled.  Today Slovenia is a democratic republic, and while the rich families still own the villas, you could also stay in one of many that have been converted to inns and most of Lake Bled is lined with public recreational parks.  The castle is a now a an interesting museum with spectacular views. Vintgar Gorge Hike

Our Guide Sanjin, having seen us successfully navigate the stairs at the Bled Castle, suggested we might enjoy seeing the natural beauty of Slovenia and took us to the Vintgar Gorge (also known as the Bled Gorge for it's proximity to Bled) for a hike. Ordinarily,  an out and back route, Sanjin dropped us at the entrance and met us at the other end, so we didn't have to retrace our steps.  The hike is not for the faint of heart with narrow bridges and some damp, steep slopes along the way, but the views were well worth the effort!

The Radvona River runs through the unique "karst" geology in Slovenia and over millions of year creates dramatic gorges and caves.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is one of Europe's most atmospheric capital cities.  It's small size makes it almost entirely walk-able, and the original baroque architecture is visible everywhere. There are also churches that date to Roman times. Settled along both sides of the Ljubljanica River.  Along the right bank is the Stari Grad (or old town) while the more modern part of Ljubljana and the Tivoli Park are along the left bank.

Ljubljana Town Hall

After exploring the city on foot, Sanjin took us to one his favorite quick cafes for a traditional "fast food" lunch in Slovenia.  We enjoyed two local soups based on barley and sour kraut and some traditional sausages.  We had also bought a piece of famous Bled sweet cake at Bled castle to enjoy for dessert.  Because Slovenia is also know for it's honey, you can find honey and treats made from it at the local market nearby. The dragon is the symbol of Slovenia, and one of the scenic bridges over the Ljubljanic River is called the Dragon Bridge and features many baroque era bronze dragons.

A pedestrian lane in the Old City

Foliage lines the walls of the Ljubljana Castle.  The castle with historic origins, is a very steep walk, and many tours don't include it because it has been almost completely remodeled with very little original sections.  It serves as a very busy civic center today, and is free to climb up and enjoy the views over the city

On our way back to our ship, we marveled at how much Slovenia felt like our home in New England!

Colorful fisherman' homes in Burano

Murano, Burano and Torcello; Islands in the Venetian Lagoon

October 31, 2017

After a few days of hitting the bricks in Venice, it hits you...there is nothing but bricks and water here! Where is the "green"?!

Our guide, Andrea, insists that google earth will reveal green patches of gardens tucked inside the courtyards of palazzo all over the islands, but as a casual visitor, on the outside of those courtyards, I wasn't seeing any green- no lawns, no trees, no swaths of shrubbery in front of buildings and no big city parks to give your mind a break from all the architecture..  To find the green around Venice, the best thing to do is get out to the other islands in the Venetian lagoon!

One of the enjoyable parts of a tour to the lagoon islands is seeing Saint Marks from the lagoon!

Murano

Ways To Get To Islands

1- Take a complimentary taxi/tour offered by one of the glass houses on Murano. This could involve a pretty hard sell at the glass house that sponsors the trip, and sometimes requires you to make your own way back at your own expense. But it can be a budget option, if you can resist busting your budget on the beautiful glass art!

2-If you have an ACTV pass to ride the water ferries, you can ride them from San Marco or Foundemente Nuove in the north to the individual islands. Look for 12 Line.

3-You can take a group "tour" (narrated ferry trip) to the islands, which includes a demonstration in Murano and time on your own at the islands with passage back to San Marco (one provider is Alilaguna, look for their ticket booth near the Giradinetti Pontoon in San Marco.)

4-You can hire a private taxi or tour to take you to the islands and wait for you between stops. Obviously, this is the priciest option!

We visited the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello on a boat tour with Alilaguna. This was a multi lingual tour, with a guide pointing out things in the lagoon in 4 different languages.  We stopped was approximately 50 minutes -1 hour on each island. Other than a brief optional glass blowing demo, the time on the islands was your own to spend as you please.

Lido

Lido, is connected to Central Venice by ferry (Bring your car over by car ferry from Tronchetto) This is a popular beach destination, but also one of the places where you can see trees in Venice.  Our tour didn't visit Lido...it's a destination for our next rrip!

Murano

Murano is known for it's glass blowers.  Venice, has long been known for it's glass blowing artisans.  Glass is blown after it's heated in huge furnaces and then it can be shaped and blown into beautiful pieces of art or useful household objects, such as chandeliers or glasses.  Unfortunately, in the past, those super hot furnaces often started destructive fires in central Venice, so the glass blowers were all forced to move to Murano in the late 13th century.

Our tour included a visit to the the Ferro Lazzarini Furnace.  There were several bleachers to sit in around the burning hot furnace room.  While an artisan created items through blowing and twisting molten glass, a narrator explained in English, and Spanish what was happening and gave some history of glass blowing in Venice.

After the short demonstration, we had abut 45 minutes to either shop at the Ferro Lazzarini House Gallery, or wander around to the other shops and glass houses along the canal in Murano.

Burano

Via Baldassare Galuppi

Our next stop was Burano, well known for it's lace (although given automation, it's rare to find anyone still hand making lace today) and colorful fisherman's homes along the shore.  This is a good place to get a snack or sit in a cafe for espresso along the main area- Via Baldassare Galuppi.

It's an easy walk from the ferry or tour boat dock into the main area, and you can follow the way to the the Church in Burano which has another "leaning" bell tower, and you'll see several picturesque pedestrian bridges.  If you wander off the Via Baldassare Galuppi, you can see beautifully painted homes, many sporting big curtains draped over their doors;  whether to keep bugs or tourists out, I can't say!

Torcello

Santa Maria dell Assunta (l)  and Santa Fosca (r) 11th century churches

Often called the green island, the ferry and boat dock is almost a mile into "town" along a wide canal-side walkway.  One of the oldest inhabited islands in the Venetian Lagoon, the Santa Maria dell Assunta there dates to the 6th century, although the Basilica there today was mostly built in the 11th century. This was the first place we encountered trees, lawns and even some farms connected to restaurants and pubs. Torcello is a nice place to sit for a drink or coffee along the canal or explore the Byzantine churches. There is also an archaeological museum on a path along the canal near the vaporetto stop.
