Street Art is popular in Santiago, this colorful, heavy black line style is characteristic of Chilean artists

48 Hours in Santiago Chile

May 13, 2024

Santiago was a surprise for us…a gateway to our recent Antarctica cruise and a stopover before 10 days in Patagonia, we had the opportunity to get to know the city. Because Santiago is gateway to Patagonia in the south or and the Atacama Desert to the north, and lots of cruises use Valparaiso Chile (to the west) as a cruise embarkation port, many travelers might find themselves in this modern, relatively safe, well organized city for a few days. If you have 48 hours (or MORE!) to explore Santiago, we highly recommend spending some time exploring! Here are our top picks for things to do based on our recent visit.

Getting Around the Neighborhoods

We were based in a high end international hotel in the Las Condes neighborhood and a comfortable apartment in Providenica neighborhood. We could easily walk around these neighborhoods and use the metro system, to pass through areas where we might not have felt comfortable walking, we found the Metro to be clean, safe (with ordinary precautions) and easy to navigate. We had more difficulty using ride share apps. It appeared when we used our app with the United States phone numbers, we did not get available drivers accepting out ride, but having the concierge use their app with their Chilean number, cabs or ride share cars would arrive, and we could pay the driver in cash and tip the concierge. We also heard from people who had trouble with cabs leaving the airport, so if you can, arrange for a car service from the airport ahead of time. We had a recommendation from our AirBNB owner for a wonderful local “fixer” , Pablo, who arranged our airport transfers ahead of time and was available all week to take us on several tours outside of Santiago. (Private Message me if you find yourself in Santiago and need a local to help organize your transportation around the city, I’ll connect you.)

Here are few photos and ideas for touring some of the neighborhoods in Santiago!

Los Condes and El Golf

Home to most of the international hotels and major businesses, Los Codes and El Golf are fashionable, upscale neighborhoods with fine cafes and shops catering to Santiago’s professional class.

We enjoyed staying in this upscale and international area of the city, found a favorite gelato shop and a dog park where would sit among the locals each evening and people (and dog!) watch. There were some nice cafes and restaurants in this area, but it’s a more modern area with few historic attractions.

A popular dog park in Los Condes was the perfect place to sit and enjoy a gelato and meet the “locals”!

Providencia

Our Air BNB in Santiago in the heart of Providencia’s cafes and shops and overlooking fashionable Los Condes neighborhood was an ideal central location for exploring the city

Our Airbnb was perfectly located at the edge of Providencia, within walking distance of all of the fashionable cafes in Providencia and Los Condes, the Costanera Mall with a huge supermarket and a metro station. We found neighborhood was safe to walk in the evenings and quiet for being in the heart of the city.

Bella Vista

Virgin Mary atop the Cerro Cristobal in the Metropolitan Park of Santiago

We found it safest to visit the Bella Vista neighborhood during the day, and that worked well because its home to the Parque Metroplitano de Santiago on the Cerro San Cristobal and it’s statue of the virgin and expansive views over the city. We were able to take the funicular, and visit Casa Museo La Chascona (the preserved home of Nobel Peace Prize winning peot, Pablo Neruda). There are also multiple park areas, pools and a zoo!

Plaza De Armas and Santiago Centro is where we found the greatest concentration of historic sites and museums. We comfortably toured this area during daylight hours, and took a tour focusing on street art through a local guide service called Santiago Street Art Tours.

Indigenous art throughout all of Latin America is the focus of the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and we all had our favorites; a woven example of the earliest record keeping, small clay bowls with “cat ears” and more modern pieces that interpret the pain of the people lost during the 1973 military dictatorship.

Cerro Santa Lucia fountains

Cerro Santa Lucia is a small vertical hillside park in the center of Santiago with an interesting history. The hill was important to the Mapuche people, and was one of the places that Spanish colonists took for strategic defense. Later a mayor developed it as a lush park and the old fort stands at the top with incredible views of the city. The park is accessible by cobblestone pedestrian ways and staircases.

There are several museums in the Parque Quinta Normal west of the city. We visited the human rights museum, Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, which walks visitors through the military coup of 1973, atrocities during the dictatorship and eventual return to democracy after an historic vote held under intense international scrutiny in 1990.

In the Eastern foothills of the Andes, we visited the art and craft market at Pueblo Los Dominicos

Pueblo Los Dominicos, originally a Mapuche settlement, eventually became a colonial church community and in the 80’s was redeveloped as an artisan market. In addition to traditional Chilean woven goods, clay and wood crafts, there area variety of unique artisans creating jewelry, leather goods and a even fellow carving matchsticks into tiny sculptures.

Day Trips from Santiago

Our local fixer, Pablo, arranged several day trips around Santiago for us with driver, Rafael

Day Trip Valparaiso and the Pacific Coast

Our visit in Feb coincided with a heat wave in Santiago, and uncontrolled wildfires to the west. Our planned visit to Valparaiso and stay in an Air Bnb there had to be scuttled for safety sake. Our driver was willing to take us out to the coast, but the Chilean and US governments were warning us not to visit and we did not feel comfortable taking the chance of getting stranded, adding to evacuation traffic, using resources needed for evacuees or exposing ourselves to breathing dangerous smoke.

Luckily, our fixer, Pablo, was able to suggest several alternatives and we were able to explore the coast further north where our daughter was able to see her first penguins in the wild!

Cachagua, home to an off shore island Humboldt penguin colony viewable from the beach during the breeding season.

Cachagua

Our daughter joined us in Santiago, and had two big requests…one was to see penguins in the wild, which was possible at the Playa Grande in Chacagua. The Monumento Natural Isla Cachagua refuge is visible from the beach and there are some boat tours that will take visitors out on the water nearer to the penguins (Visitors are not allowed to go on the island) but with a good pair of binoculars you can watch the antics of the penguins and see many other animals and birds who use the island for breeding and resting.

Day Trip Wine Tasting in the Casablanca Valley

Casa Del Bosque winery in Casablanca

Our Valparaiso plans canceled, we decided to explore the wine region of Chile, with a visit and lunch at Casa Del Bosque. We enjoyed a tasting room, walks around the vineyard and organic gardens as well as a lunch of local wines.

Day Trip Hiking in the Andes

There are several day hikes around Santiago in the foot hills of the Andes; we chose to hire a local guide with expertise in the area to lead our hike.

The second request on our daughter’s “must do” list? A hike into the foot hills of the Andes. We arranged a hike with a local guide through Trip Advisor, but our daughter made a rookie mistake…it’s always important to confirm any tours booked through third party sites and receive a local contact number in case there is a missed connection. Our first attempt, we were up early and our guide never arrived. Without the a local phone number we couldn’t call to see if the guide was lost or had another issue. When the office to the tour company opened, the owner quickly rescheduled the hike for another day and we received that important contact number!

Our second attempt, was a bit cooler, mid 70s instead of mid 90s at 7 AM, and the guide was right on time. After driving a half an hour out of town, our guide took us to a trail head in Parque Cordillera (which literally means foot hills!) We headed out early while it was still cool, but we were challenged by elevation, and vertical and only hiked as far as we felt we could safely, because a successful hike is the one you survive!

With over a week to enjoy Santiago, we were able to cover a lot ground and explore several interesting spots in and around the city. If your travels take you to Santiago, be sure to leave some time to explore!

A Good Night In Boston

April 28, 2024

It was a warm sunny afternoon and pleasant evening, not yet short sleeves weather, but perfect spring in New England weather, in late April, before the graduation crowds and summer tourists descend. The perfect kind of night to enjoy the city. And except for spending more on parking than on dinner, it was perfect!~

Boston was filled with good natured locals enjoying their city, in a good mood with the Sox drubbing the Cubs 17-0 at Fenway and both the Bruins and Celtics winning playoff games away from home. Everyone was in a good mood. And anyone who knows New England knows that if the Boston sports fans are happy, it’s a more pleasant place to be!

At the Museum of Fine Arts, multicultural kids flowed into Hallyu! an exhibit of Korean pop art, music and fashion that has influenced the culture worldwide, while also referencing ancient Korean culture.

Meanwhile, suburban garden aficionados flowed into the MFA for Art In Bloom, an annual springfest of floral arrangements designed by Massachusetts Garden clubs to interpret dozens of artworks chosen by the MFA across the museum and in every medium. With the delicate florals lasting only a few days, this popular event sees thousands of visitors during one short weekend. The blossoming trees around the museum and in the Fens were also putting on their own show!

Later, the famed North End of Boston, home to the best Italian restaurants and bakeries, was bustling with happy sports fans (except those two we saw in Chicago Cubs jerseys) and college kids blowing off steam before final exams. The North End was filled with twinkly lights. traffic, lines of diners waiting for tables in tiny wine bars and firefighters in Barcaloungers with the garage doors wide open watching the B’s on a big screen mounted to the wall, until a call came in.

We ended the night joining the fast moving line at the pastry shop, selecting traditional Italian pastry to eat on a bench in the Rose Kennedy Greenway while a young busker played her “electric” violin. It will be our last night in the “big city” for a while, but it was fine one!

Stories From the Hawaiian Islands Oahu

April 11, 2024

“Don’t spend any time in Oahu” they said.

Its a good thing I don’t listen to “them” when choosing where I will travel, because I found Oahu to be a wonderful place to visit. Yes, I also visited 4 other Hawaiian Islands and loved them all, for different reasons, and some were more natural or less crowded than Oahu, but that didn’t lessen the appeal of Oahu for me! (see our other Hawaiian stories click here: Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Hawaii) A friend recently booked a trip to Oahu and asked about my visit there. I realized I hadn’t posted here because I was falling into the trap of thinking of Oahu as a pass through, not interesting enough for people to read about. But I realize that in fact, millions of people go to Oahu and love it, as I did! So if Oahu is in your future…lucky you, but be prepared to plan ahead!! And here are some thoughts for planning your trip there.

Honolulu

It’s simple enough to base yourself in Waikiki Beach and explore without a rental car and enjoy a visit entirely on foot! You can also rent hire guides, take an car service or use the decent public bus system to explore areas around Honolulu. To get further afield up to the North Shore our out to the eastern or western parts of Oahu, you’ll need a rental car, hire a guide or do a group tour. All of these are easily arranged, but if you travel during the popular winter season, Dec- late April, you’ll want to make your arrangements well in advance for lodging, rental cars and tours. Especially with Lahaina still in active recovery from devastating wildfires in 2023, you can expect other areas in the Hawaiian islands to be more crowded.

If visiting other islands on small planes, use luggage storage at the airport for excess gear.

〰️

If visiting other islands on small planes, use luggage storage at the airport for excess gear. 〰️ If visiting other islands on small planes, use luggage storage at the airport for excess gear. 〰️

If you are island hopping, you might be taking a small plane with strict baggage weight limits, they may even weight YOU! Check these limits before you travel.

Waikiki

If you place yourself in a rental condo or hotel room in Waikiki, you can probably walk to visit most of the top attractions. Of course there’s the beach, and it’s bordered by a great walkway along Kalakaua Avenue with several pocket parks, many with a different statue of Duke Kahanamoku, the famous Olympic surfer. Along the Avenue, you’ll find all of the shops, and high end hotels, but you don’t need to stay at one on the beach to have a great experience, choose a condo or hotel a few blocks back from the beach, most include a bicycle and or beach chair. You can easily walk to the beach (or take the bike) and enjoy your beach day without needing to have your room on the beach!

Sunset on Waikiki

Where else can you go on foot from Waikiki?

Honolulu Zoo

I’ll cop to not having enough time to visit this zoo, but everyone who has says its very well done! I enjoy a well organized zoo (this is also a park and aquarium!) that helps me better understand the animals I’ll encounter in a new place.

Diamond Head

This 300,000 year old volcanic crater is one of Oahu’s most popular hiking trails. The trail built in the early 20th century by the military for surveillance is now a state park that requires a reservation to climb. Click here: Diamond Head. and make reservations 30 days in advance of the date you’d like to hike. You’ll need to try for parking reservations right at 30 days if you plan to park a car. Walking or taking a car service, you’ll probably find reservations after 30 days, even if you might not get the most popular time slots of dawn and dusk. Getting reservations early in the day is a good idea if you don’t want to hike in the heat of the day.

Views from Diamond Head

Shopping at International Market Place

In the center of Waikiki, you’ll find this open air mall with all the top luxury brands. If you don’t plan to shop designers, and just need a few essentials, check out the ubiquitous ABC stores, which sell everything from booze, sunscreen, and beach supplies as well as take away food, and souvenirs.

Kuhio Beach Hula Mound

Three times a week at dusk, this park hosts a ceremony at sunset and showcases young hula dancers who are taking hula lessons to learn their Hawaiian culture. Check the web for exact times and days, as these change with the seasons.

Downtown

Largely the business center, Downtown also hosts cultural tourist attractions including Iolani Palace, King Kamehameha Statue, Honolulu Museum of Art and the modern government buildings. Nearby, popular Chinatown provides a great place for authentic Chinese food. This was an area we didn’t have enough time to visit during our weeklong stay!

Just Outside of Honolulu

A ride share or bus ride away, these sites also require some planning ahead! Check out the sites and note the dates that that tickets for each spot become available!

Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial

Another popular site with tourists, the site of the US Naval Base during WWII, and the attacks that brought the US into the war, its has several components including he somber USS Arizona Memorial, over 1000 Sailors were entombed beneath the sea on Dec 7 1941, and this site is accessible by ferry from Pearl Harbor. You’ll need to book a timed entry here Peal Harbor 8 weeks in advance from the National Park Service. Click here: Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial tickets Even if you can’t score tickets for the Arizona Memorial, there are several other museums, and vessels open for exploration at Pearl Harbor.

The Arizona Memorial is the final resting place for the brave men who died Dec 7 1941, you'll be reminded to dress appropriately and behave respectfully during your pre tour briefing

Turtle, Dive and Snorkel Tours

Small vessels that take out tourists for whale watching, turtle tours, snorkeling or diving are accessible from the piers in the harbor at the end of Waikiki Beach. You can search ahead of time for an operator or stroll up to a kiosks by the pier and book. During busier times it’s best to book a well reviewed outfitter. We took a “turtle tour” with Living Ocean Tours we really liked.

Seeing sea turtles in high on the list of every visitors list of things to do. A good boat tour will ensure you have the best chance to see them safely.

Hanauma Bay

One of the most popular snorkel sites, accessible from the shore, is a state park so popular that you must book a timed entry 48 hours before, at EXACTLY 7 AM or be left without a reservation through Honolulu Parks and Recreation. Click Here: Hananuma Bay Once in, you may stay as long as you like, so book an early slot!

Makapua Point and Lighthouse

While you’ll probably need a driver or rental car to see this eastern most point of Oahu, you might find it worth the trip. A hike up to the top is a paved pedestrian path, making it more accessible, but the vertical and heat can make it a challenging walk despite only being a couple of miles.

The path is paved, but hot, but this is one of the best places on the eastern edge of Oahu to see migrating whales

This village was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1864, and today students of Polynesian Culture come from all over to learn traditional arts and ways The students demonstrate these throughout the day for visitors.

Waimea Valley

We used a tour company called the North Shore Surf Bus Click here which took us on several stops with delicious local foods to try and view spots along the north shore, and for a hike in the Waimea Botanical Park. Stops can be customized too!

There are plenty of places we didn’t visit in Oahu, little hideaways, places you might reach with a rental car, read about them on any of the many tourism Hawaii sites you’ll find. This is our “taste of Oahu” and if you plan to “go see it” yourself, we hope you’ll find our advice and ideas helpful!
