Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Maine 2020

Moose Safari

First our Guide Don, from Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps sends out a mournful call similar to a cow moose, that echoes through the glacial gorge around the lake. Within a few minutes we hear branches snapping and logs crunching under the hooves of a massive bull moose. As he edges his way out of the woods to the shore, Don, swirls the water to imitate the sound of a moose wading in the glass like pond. The moose emerges in the dawn light to realize he’s been cat fished, but not before we capture an amazing photo of him amidst the peak foliage of the Nahmakanta Wilderness Area.

Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camp

Whether you arrive at this camp via the dirt logging roads or float plane, getting there truly is part of the adventure. Private cabins, with gas lights, refrigerators and ranges, each has a designated bath nearby, as well as use of small water craft, fire pits, grills, and picnic tables. I won’t call it glamping because of the seriousness with which the guests here take their experience; paddling, hunting, fishing, hiking or wildlife safari, folks visiting are here to fully experience the natural world, off the grid.
