Fear of the Flowrider

February 6, 2018

Soon, I'll be back on a Royal Caribbean Ship that features a Flowrider Surf Simulator, and I'm very afraid! Read on to see what happened in 2011, the last time I took on (dramatic pause) THE FLOWRIDER!

If you have done any reading at all about Royal Caribbean Oasis class ships you know that the ships have two Flowrider Surf Simulators on baord, and that most reviewers share tales of how these powerful wave machines tear the clothing off of women like a sailor on leave. In the short time I watched, I saw a top and a bottom go missing, as well as an earring. Not even a one piece suit will save you, as we saw one woman have a one sided wardrobe malfunction. And I can report that it also tore the pedicure right off my toes.

Now, when it comes to nudity, scientists have studied this issue and they have learned that there is a logarithmic decrease in interest in seeing a persons unclothed tush with the passing of each decade. So while all 6 or 7 billion of the earth's inhabitants think seeing a baby's tush is adorable, and a 20 year old's enjoyable, as you add decades, any interest wanes markedly until (if you are very lucky) when you hit your 70's, that there is just one single person left on the planet who is still interested in seeing your tushie! (Scientists also note that at this point, even YOU will not be interested in seeing your own tushie, assuming of course you can see at all!) Well, I do think of myself as being in pretty good condition for an old broad, but unfortunately, according to the research (which, I should note,  I made up entirely!), that at my age, the odds of finding even one of the 6000 passengers on the Oasis being interested in seeing my tush is almost nil.

But did that stop me, even though it's been reported far and wide that people and their suits are parted on the Flow Rider?...oh no! So here is the story of how I came to be one of "those" people. One who parted with my suit on the Flow Rider, and the only consolation is that I was in a small private lesson, very early in the morning, so I only ruined the appetites of 4 or 5 people (My husband is not talking), and to my everlasting good luck, there was no one in the "stands" to record my shame for Youtube. Given that there were only unreliable witnesses (it was early, and I'm sure they were partying the night before!) and no video evidence, I could have pretended that this never happened. But No...in the spirit of full disclosure, in order to make your cruise vacation better and safe, I am willing to... ahem...bare all and tell my tale.

After all my extensive research, I thought I would be safe with a surf bikini with an adjustable tie at the hip and a surf shirt over the sporty top. Very sporty, very secure for real surfing, in a real ocean with real waves. (but clearly no match for ...dramatic pause...the Flow Rider).

We got up and headed right to the sports deck in the morning. Our small group consisted of a young woman, 3 men whose lovely ladies took one look and said " yeah, right, you can take a lesson on that thing, I'll be at the pool", (wise, wise women!) and my hubby and myself. The crew members Andy and a fellow from Brazil whose name escapes me (sorta like my suit bottom!) were wonderful, very patient and explained everything, and then they got us trying out the (dramatic pause) Flowrider

Most of the guys wanted to try stand up as they had boogie boarded earlier in the week. Only my DH and I were complete newbies. The staff do a nice job of riding along beside you, and helping coach you through the moves, which is to jump into the wave, boogie board for a while and then try to rise up onto your knees. Once you've mastered that they encourage you to try some tricks, like "superman" where you toss the board forward and then catch it, or a barrel roll. I think these are encouraged largely just to get you to wipe out so the next person can have their turn, but that's just speculation on my part!

Andy was working with me in the wave when I suddenly felt my bottoms heading south. I reacted quickly and dingtoed my feet, so they caught on my feet rather shooting all the up the wave to the bailout area, where I knew I would have the double shame of having to search for them. (and yet somehow the image of me with my bottom, bare in the air and my bottoms ensnared on my feet gives me very little comfort today.) It took me a second to register that I was still on this board, separated from my suit and giving the rest of the crowd and eyeful of awful! While contemplating what my next possible move could be Andy suggested I go for the kneel up on the board maneuver.

At this moment I decided I had better fess up, so over the rush of the water (it's really loud), I yell to Andy "I can't, I've lost my bottoms" (yeah, covering myself in glory here!). At which his face took on a look of terror and he screamed back " bail out!!!". And being a good student and wanting to spare him any more horror, I did immediately. SO now the wave has blown me back to the top at the bailout area, even closer to the mortified group, and the adorable Brazilian (whose name still escapes me). The next little thought to pop into this little blond head (natural, BTW) is "Hmmm, how am I going to get these back on without standing up, and revealing even more unwanted views?"

This Fort Lauderdale home features it's own private Flowrider, which might be the safest way to enjoy (dramatic pause) The Flowrider!

Luckily, the terrific staff at RCI is trained for these just these sort of emergencies and immediately went into full defcon "bottom retrieval and replacement" mode. I have never seen anything so efficient in my life...a boogie board is quickly raised to block the view, the group is asked to avert their eyes, the kind Brazilian gentleman holding the boogie board up averts his eyes, and with whatever modicum of dignity I have left, I reunite with my bottoms, which thankfully, I did not need to search for, or worse, have retrieved and handed to me by the adorable Brazilian crew member! I sheepishly join the group waiting in line for another turn, laughing my fool head off because what else are you going to do at that point! Luckily for me, I am not the only one with a wardrobe malfunction this morning, just the first, so we all decide, "what happens on the Flowrider, stays on the Flowrider" ! A few minutes later we are all boarding along, all having a great time, pretending that none of knows more than we should about one another and lose nothing more than toenail polish for the rest of the day!

A Painting, A Rock, A Wedding and A Near Carjacking; Just a Day in Montenegro

November 13, 2017

Before you panic, and think "A CARJACKING! Well, I'm never going THERE"...Montenegro is perfectly safe, wonderful actually! It was Jeff who was nearly jacked a car!  But more on that later, lets start with ...

A Painting

Icon of Our Lady of the Rocks,  Lovro Dobričević of Kotor  (circa 1452)

Our adventure in Montenegro started with finding a good tour guide. We noodled around on Trip Advisor and Cruise Critic and the name Dimitrije from Mont Travelers kept coming up.  He was very responsive via email, and we chose a private Best of Montenegro tour itinerary and invited another couple we were cruising with on Azamara Quest to share the cost.   Dmititrje (a man whose name matches his attention to detail, there are a lot of T's to cross and I's to dot in that name, and he takes care of the details on a Mont Traveler Tour too!)  met us full of enthusiasm right on time at the pier.

A tour started in the seaside town of Perast, where we wandered along the coast, enjoying the natural beauty of the coast of the Bay of Kotor and the little village.

Mountainous "Montenegro" is well named.

Seen around Perast; a Yugo, a pair of Catalan tourists looking for someone to take their photo, and some local hospitality (click on any image below to expand)

Perast is also the town where you can get a boat to the Our Lady of the Rock Church.  They run regularly, you pay a few Euro at the dock and are on your way.

We wanted to go out to this church because of a legend we heard from Capt. Carl Smith of the Azamara Quest. Legend holds in the 15th century, that a pair of Croat brothers were out fishing and found a painting of the Madonna and Child lying on a rock.  They were so overcome, that they promised to build a church in honor of this miracle, and to make the foundation, the poor fisherman would place a rock in the same place in the Bay of Kotor after every successful fishing trip.  Over time so many faithful fisherman added rocks to honor Our Lady,  that an islet appeared in the bay of Kotor. Eventually a church was built, which today also houses a small museum.

Out in the Bay of Kotor, Our Lady of the Rock can be accessed by a short inexpensive boat trip from Perast. Inside the church, you can see the Madonna and Child icon that inspired the church.

Inside a small museum on the island, you can see many paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a 17th-century baroque artist from the town of Perast. Below: the Lady of the Rocks, Kokolja's The Death of the Virgin., detail of the door, Madonna and Child icon that inspired the church. (Click on any image to enlarge)

A Rock

The Azamara Quest "rock" added at the museum in Our Lady of the Rock, above the rock is a painting of the church, built upon a bed of rocks piled in the bay over the years.

Captain Carl was so enamored with this story, that he decided he also wanted to add a "rock" to the islet.  After navigating a large cruise ship through the narrow fjords of the Bay of Kotor,  he must have felt that it was a fitting way to give thanks! According to Captain Carl, it took a bit of doing, accessing permissions and making arrangements, but finally, in 2010, Azamara Quest was able to "add" a special commemorative rock, participating in a 500 year old tradition! (see Azamara's account of the story here)

A local map of the narrow, twisting gorges heading into Bay of Kotor, after navigating this safely, you can see why fishermen, and cruise ship captains, would be grateful!

A Wedding

After our journey to Our Lady of the Rocks, Dimitrije drove us to the Medieval town of Budva. A beautiful Sunday morning, we wandered inside the Venetian built walls of Budva, and happened upon a traditional Montenegro wedding being held in a more contemporary church within sight of the Historic Santa Maria in Punta.

The Stari Grad (Old Town) of Budva

We also had a chance to enjoy a little of the famous "Budva Riveria", a popular European resort area in Montenegro.

A Near Carjacking

After our visit to Budva, our Guide Dimitrije drove us up the winding road high above Boka Bay.  This road is not for the faint of heart, with 27 switchbacks, really only wide enough for one car.  The road is not really wide enough for full sized tour buses. Now add multiple full sized tour buses to the road, and the view is not the only thing that will take your breath away!

We had an incredible and uneventful trip to the top, and enjoyed the views.

Views of the bay from the mountain high above Kotor, wiht multiple cruise ships docked and anchored.

At the top there is a small town with a few tourist stalls set up to sell local specialties. On the way back down, the traffic coming up had increased significantly and included several large buses full of cruise ship passengers.  Most of the professional drivers have a good understanding of what everyone; bus drivers, mini bus drivers, tour guide cars, should do. A carefully choreographed dance of pulling forward, backing up, parking on tiny shoulders happens and everyone smiles, waves and moves on. Unfortunately, every once in a while added to this mix are tourists who have rented cars, with little experience on the twisty narrow road, and even less nerve!

Details from along the road above Kotor (click on an y image to expand)

On our trip down the mountain, a large bus got to a narrow corner and commandeered the entire road.  In the car in front of us was a young lady in a rental car who had no where to go and no good ideas about what to do next.  So she stopped, the bus stopped, we stopped, the cars behind us stopped, the cars behind the bus stopped and we all sat, no one moved up and no one moved down!

We had a little problem because we had just about an hour to get back to our ship, or it was heading out of the Bay of Kotor without us!  After sitting about 10 minutes, nothing had moved, and it appeared that no one was going to take charge of the situation, and that we might just sit there until we all ran out of gas! Cars continued to back up in both directions. No one honked or gestured, this would certainly have happened in our hometown of Boston, everyone just SAT there.   Suddenly the door to our car flung open and Jeff sprang out of the car.  Dimitrije, looked back at me, wide eyed, and asked "What is he going to DO?!"  I could not answer.  My fear was that I had not brought enough Euros to bail him out of jail.

Our Guide Dimitirji with his guests above the Boka Bay

Jeff walked calmly to the rental car and asked the young tourist driving it if he could drive the car.  She didn't speak much English and was panicked, like a deer in the headlights, so she wasn't listening or speaking at all, head to head with a huge tour bus with a menacing looking driver who had no intention of backing up even an inch!  Her passengers exhorted to her in their native language to let the nice (crazy?) American man move the car, but she sat glued in her seat.  Finally, she let Jeff reach into the car and he took the steering wheel. He told the young lady when to step on the gas and the brake and together with Jeff standing out in the road with his hands through the window on her steering wheel, they maneuvered rental car so it could be moved off the road just enough for the enormous bus to pass.  After the bus passed our vehicle, Jeff cheerfully hopped back into our car and said, "Ok Dimitrije, NOW we are ready to go back to the ship!"  I'm sure Dimitrije couldn't have been happier to get rid of us, but he was far too polite and professional to say so!

So as long as you don't try to commit a car jacking while in Montenegro, I think you you might find, as we did, a warm welcome, beautiful scenery and plenty of interesting stories to come home with!

Colorful fisherman' homes in Burano

Murano, Burano and Torcello; Islands in the Venetian Lagoon

October 31, 2017

After a few days of hitting the bricks in Venice, it hits you...there is nothing but bricks and water here! Where is the "green"?!

Our guide, Andrea, insists that google earth will reveal green patches of gardens tucked inside the courtyards of palazzo all over the islands, but as a casual visitor, on the outside of those courtyards, I wasn't seeing any green- no lawns, no trees, no swaths of shrubbery in front of buildings and no big city parks to give your mind a break from all the architecture..  To find the green around Venice, the best thing to do is get out to the other islands in the Venetian lagoon!

One of the enjoyable parts of a tour to the lagoon islands is seeing Saint Marks from the lagoon!

Murano

Ways To Get To Islands

1- Take a complimentary taxi/tour offered by one of the glass houses on Murano. This could involve a pretty hard sell at the glass house that sponsors the trip, and sometimes requires you to make your own way back at your own expense. But it can be a budget option, if you can resist busting your budget on the beautiful glass art!

2-If you have an ACTV pass to ride the water ferries, you can ride them from San Marco or Foundemente Nuove in the north to the individual islands. Look for 12 Line.

3-You can take a group "tour" (narrated ferry trip) to the islands, which includes a demonstration in Murano and time on your own at the islands with passage back to San Marco (one provider is Alilaguna, look for their ticket booth near the Giradinetti Pontoon in San Marco.)

4-You can hire a private taxi or tour to take you to the islands and wait for you between stops. Obviously, this is the priciest option!

We visited the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello on a boat tour with Alilaguna. This was a multi lingual tour, with a guide pointing out things in the lagoon in 4 different languages.  We stopped was approximately 50 minutes -1 hour on each island. Other than a brief optional glass blowing demo, the time on the islands was your own to spend as you please.

Lido

Lido, is connected to Central Venice by ferry (Bring your car over by car ferry from Tronchetto) This is a popular beach destination, but also one of the places where you can see trees in Venice.  Our tour didn't visit Lido...it's a destination for our next rrip!

Murano

Murano is known for it's glass blowers.  Venice, has long been known for it's glass blowing artisans.  Glass is blown after it's heated in huge furnaces and then it can be shaped and blown into beautiful pieces of art or useful household objects, such as chandeliers or glasses.  Unfortunately, in the past, those super hot furnaces often started destructive fires in central Venice, so the glass blowers were all forced to move to Murano in the late 13th century.

Our tour included a visit to the the Ferro Lazzarini Furnace.  There were several bleachers to sit in around the burning hot furnace room.  While an artisan created items through blowing and twisting molten glass, a narrator explained in English, and Spanish what was happening and gave some history of glass blowing in Venice.

After the short demonstration, we had abut 45 minutes to either shop at the Ferro Lazzarini House Gallery, or wander around to the other shops and glass houses along the canal in Murano.

Burano

Via Baldassare Galuppi

Our next stop was Burano, well known for it's lace (although given automation, it's rare to find anyone still hand making lace today) and colorful fisherman's homes along the shore.  This is a good place to get a snack or sit in a cafe for espresso along the main area- Via Baldassare Galuppi.

It's an easy walk from the ferry or tour boat dock into the main area, and you can follow the way to the the Church in Burano which has another "leaning" bell tower, and you'll see several picturesque pedestrian bridges.  If you wander off the Via Baldassare Galuppi, you can see beautifully painted homes, many sporting big curtains draped over their doors;  whether to keep bugs or tourists out, I can't say!

Torcello

Santa Maria dell Assunta (l)  and Santa Fosca (r) 11th century churches

Often called the green island, the ferry and boat dock is almost a mile into "town" along a wide canal-side walkway.  One of the oldest inhabited islands in the Venetian Lagoon, the Santa Maria dell Assunta there dates to the 6th century, although the Basilica there today was mostly built in the 11th century. This was the first place we encountered trees, lawns and even some farms connected to restaurants and pubs. Torcello is a nice place to sit for a drink or coffee along the canal or explore the Byzantine churches. There is also an archaeological museum on a path along the canal near the vaporetto stop.
