DON'T DO EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE

February 2, 2023
“I sometimes ended up going to all the places everybody goes, just because everybody goes there”

These are the lessons I’ve learned traveling.

There was a time when if I went to a new place, especially a place I might only see once in a lifetime, I really tried to do it all. I’d read the lists of “top things to do” and then try to cram in as many as possible. I often ended up going to places that everyone goes because everyone goes there. Over time I’ve learned that having a deeper immersive experience, or choosing the one thing that really interests us or even finding the thing that’s similar but not the place “everyone else is going” makes for a better experience. I’ve learned to quote the title of a popular new movie- I don’t have to do everything, everywhere, all at once!

Angkor Wat at dawn is a dramatic and fascinating sight.

For instance, after visits to Siem Reap, and Pompeii, Jeff and I recognized that ancient architecture doesn’t thrill us the way wildlife and nature do. We had gone because “everyone goes” and because it seemed foolish to go all that way and not see THE THING that everyone went to see. While those places were fascinating, those trips don’t rank as our top experiences. We enjoyed zipping around the night markets in Siem Reap on a scooter and hiking high above the Amalfi Coast more, and with limited time, would choose those experiences over the ancient architecture. Knowing this about ourselves, we planned our trip to Peru as a cruise along the Upper Amazon, and didn’t include Machu Picchu. We had an amazing experience and we have no regrets, even if we never return to Peru. We had the travel experience we most wanted, not “everything, everywhere, all at once”!

Our itinerary for our road trip, we went south on an easterly route and north on a more western route.

Our recent 22 day road trip to Florida and back was a study in applying this philosophy to our travels Much of our road trip was designed around visits to dear friends and family. Ticking the top ten checklist was less important than quality time with loved ones. So we prioritized one or two experiences that would give us a sense of the place, allow us quality time with our hosts and also learn more about their passions for their area or see things we might not have known to visit on our own.

As the travel planner, letting go of “everything” was an incredible experience and I came away with a deeper connection to each place and to the people we were there to see!

Charleston

We visited a childhood friend of ours, she and her husband are veterans and we enjoyed catching up, but also enjoyed seeing the city through their eyes, with an interest in military history. Without our local friends insight, we might not have known to stop and chat with Ms Trudy, a local palm weaver whose ancestors were enslaved in the area. Her personal stories, shared generously, really allowed us to have a full picture of this historic city.

Satellite Beach

Experiencing the launch of of a rocket from Cape Canaveral was a highlight. This was even more special because my brother, a propulsion engineer who works on rockets at NASA was able to explain what was happening at all the stages.

Our visit to Satellite Beach was primarily to see family, but we also experienced a rocket launch, got to hike along the beach and get out on the rivers in a boat. All of this was great, but getting to do it with family and make sand castles with my great nieces and nephew, made our time there extra special.

Walt Disney World Orlando, FL

Disney World is just fun and nostalgic for us…but we did things differently this year!

On our last trip to WDW, we had paid for Genie Plus, a ticket add on that allows guests to pay an additional fee to get Lightening Lane (accelerated) Access. I didn’t have a good experience with it, I felt compelled to keep adding attractions we’d paid to experience, instead of relaxing and enjoying the park. (see the details of that WDW trip HERE)

This trip, we didn’t pay for that option and we made an effort to experience all the attentions we remembered nostalgically from our childhood. We met friends in the park and enjoyed nibbling on goodies and looking at the art displays at the Art Festival and being lovers of animals, we spent time exploring the aquarium in Epcot, where we could chat and catch up with our friends. We did enjoy a couple of new attractions we hadn’t tried before, but didn’t feel the need to ride all the top rated attractions.

Asheville, NC

I bet everyone does this! But we didn’t feel the need to “do it all” in Asheville, we just had time for a “taste”.

We had time only for a cup of coffee, but Asheville offers plenty of funky coffee shops, so we sought one out and soaked up the local vibes. With just an hour to visit, I looked at that top ten list on the tourism site and realized at 10:30 AM I wouldn’t find too many funky shops open or cool musical performances happening. Under the “arts” tab of the chamber of commerce site, I saw the South Slope Murals listed. I knew they’d be open 24/7 (though safer to visit during daylight!) and they’d be a colorful photographic subject for Jeff and a nice way to stretch our legs during a long ride

New River National Park Area, West VA

The 1977 bridge built to span the New River.

West Virginia was a little hole in the map of our places we’ve been in the US, so we decided to take a two night break there and explore the New River Gorge National Park. I sourced where to stay and some places to go with a face book friend who has a summer home there. There are literally hundreds of activities to do in this beautiful wild area, rock climbing, hiking, rafting, but our January visit ruled out many of them, so we concentrated on exploring the bridge built in 1977 that fundamentally changed the economy of area after the mining industry was finished there. By staying in a cozy cabin in the woods with an outdoor hot tub, we got to relax and soak up the gently falling snowflakes, while exploring some of the reclaimed former mining area.

Pittsburgh, PA

A selfie with the creator of RandyLand

A visit to my sister and brother in law was our last trip before the pandemic. We rode the inclines, visited the Carnegie Museum, toured Pitt, my nieces university, walked to the point, ate in the old Station Square and saw the botanical gardens; Whew, we did all the Pittsburgh things, everywhere!

This trip, we slowed it down, spent an afternoon at the National Aviary and then went to Randyland- a North Side art installation by Randy, a community activist who self describes as being on the spectrum. It’s playful, creative place that’s got to be seen to be understood, and meeting Randy and hearing his story was a highlight. We also went to Penn Brewery, it’s no gentrified brew pub, this gritty real brewery was filled with real people greeting local friends, and served up the German specialties Pittsburgh is known for on big wide pine communal tables. We also spent an hour in the Side Car cafe where my niece works, enjoying hand pies and just catching up.

My brother hits a curl at Satellite beach, getting a chance to share his passions and spend time with his family

Because we were away for over 3 weeks, maybe we just didn’t feel the pressure to do “everything, everywhere, all at once” Maybe we knew that living out of a suitcase for a month means you need to schedule some down time, or maybe we are just slowing down as we get older. But spending quality time with our family and friends was the best part of our trip, and if we’d tried to do it all, we might have missed that time with friends. I can’t promise I still won’t try to hit the highlights when I visit a new place, but I do know I don’t have to do it all to have an amazing trip!

Tiny Peruvian Night Monkeys in the Amazon all cozied up in their hole. They remind me quite a lot of how I felt about getting back to international travel in 2022! But we got back out there! And have big plans for 2023!

2023 Looking to Travel Ahead!

January 3, 2023

2022 People were back traveling, with reports of full planes, festivals and fairs running out of parking and food, and rising prices.

2023 We can expect more travelers and crowds at popular destination, which means more than ever people need great advice to choose good destinations make their trips the best! I get my advice from great travel advisors and I use trusted travel companies to take remote of group tours. Please see our list of trusted travel specialists here.

2022 In Review

Back to travel for us in 2022! After no travel in late 2020, and traveling primarily domestically, we finally got out of the country in 2022.

May and June Peru

See our trip report here. The Supay Cano in the remote Peruvian Upper Amazon Basin. Our first “big” international trip ended with a covid infection and 5 day quarantine in Iquitos, a market town that is a gateway to the Amazon. But the week on the Delfin 2 along the remote Amazon upper River Basin included pie eyed primates, secret ox box lakes, troops of monkeys leaping through the canopy, enormous flowers, tiny frogs and swimming with pink dolphins was memorable!

November Back to Ocean Cruising

It took some guts to get back on board a large cruise ship, but after contracting covid while on a small ship with just 21 passengers, I concluded, “size doesn’t matter” and with a recent “new booster” chose to take the plunge. We had a fantastic experience, re discovering our love of the open sea and adventurous ports in Caribbean Mexico.

2023 Plans

Some of our plans have been in motion for months, while others are last minute (or will be) choices. In the last 2 years so many trips were rescheduled and moved up, that we’ve decided to plan a few larger trips that depend on a lot of logistics and do some smaller explorations last minute.

Space Coast and Walt Disney World

Combining a visit with family and friends with explorations of the Space Coast and Walt Disney World in Florida. After some challenging flight schedules recently and with the difficulties of renting cars, we decided to make it a road trip rounded out with stays in Charleston SC and Pittsburg PA to explore and connect with friends and family.

Vermont Skiing and Ocean Cruising to Mexico and Grand Cayman

Hoping to chase away winter blues by “embracing” winter with a cross country ski trip to Vermont (pictured) and “escape” winter with a cruise into Mexico and Grand Cayman.

Hawaii

Our last foray into Polynesian landscapes and culture was in 2012, to Tahiti (and Moorea in the distance)aboard the Paul Gaugin cruise ship. Now more than 10 years later, we plan to visit Hawaii and explore under water, along the shores and up into the volcanic mountains. We will be cruising on the Uncruise expedition ship Safari Explorer (36 passengers) and crossing the Pacific to Vancouver aboard Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas (with over 4ooo passengers!)

Balloon Festival in Mane

A bucket list adventure! We have a weekend planned in northern Maine where we hope the weather cooperates and we can take a balloon ride and photograph mass balloons launches! (stock photography)

The Back 1/2 of 2023

(Stock image)

We are open to adventure! Our biggest adventure will exploring our LAST CONTINENT - Antarctica in early 2024! In just over a year we hope to explore Patagonia and cruise to South Georgia Island and the Antarctic peninsula.

Many more adventures to come, so long as we are blessed with good health! Thank you to our followers who have engaged with our content through the years and especially to our friends who participated in out “Go See It People” interviews. Please share where your next adventure will be!

Thank you to all our friends and readers for following along, and we wish you good health and exciting adventures in 2023!

New York City Christmas on Broadway! Photos, Notes and Anecdotes

December 14, 2022

Photos, Notes and Anecdotes

A Christmas Visit to NYC

  • • If you’d like someone to pull all the pieces of a NYC Broadway trip together for you, including insider extras like tours of theaters and chats with performers, you can’t go wrong with Custom Traveler Insider. we’ve traveled with them twice and they provide full service and high touch at a very affordable price for NYC by negotiating the price of the components (shows and hotels and meals) that individuals wouldn’t be able to score. We spent 4 days and took in 5 shows, including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes.

We paid for our on trip and did not receive compensation from any travel providers.

20221209 - New York City - 020.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 023.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 031.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 012.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 035.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 048.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 054.jpg
  • • To avoid crowds, we often walked a block over to 6th or 8th to avoid the crush in Times Sq when navigating around the area

  • • Speaking of crowds and ergo, viruses- I’m no epidemiologist, but I’d imagine those crowds are a risk for any of several viruses circulating this winter

  • • And yet, we noticed only 1:20 to 1:50 people masking in public including in theaters where announcements were made that they weren’t required but requested. I’m wondering if people are beginning to feel more comfortable, as we were, to be free of masks and take their chances with a viral illness as we have most other winters of our lives.

  • Spotted the naked cowboy giving a few dollars to a man without a home in the street

  • We went to the Christmas Market at Bryant Park early, when it first opened and were able to wander around easily, it got more crowded as the afternoon arrived. There was a very nice selection of local artisans and food booths

20221211 - New York City - 298.jpg 20221211 - New York City - 387.jpg 20221211 - New York City - 301.jpg 20221211 - New York City - 345.jpg
  • • If possible make reservations through open table for restaurants to guarantee a table when you want to have a meal and use apps to pre order for pick up at fast food joints

  • • And yet, we found Manhattan not to be suffering from the same “lack of staff” we’ve encountered elsewhere. Counter service establishments were efficient and full service restaurants still employed bus boys and seemingly idle men in suit jackets whose only job is to open your wine or add parmesan cheese to your dish.

  • • Eating at “off times” 11 AM lunch or 5 or 10:30 PM dinners allowed us to find reservations or walk into restaurants.

20221209 - New York City - 079.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 085.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 083.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 270.jpg
  • • One of the restaurants where we ate was feeding a woman without a home, at the end of their bar. She was wearing open toed dress sandals on a rainy raw December night and muttering “look at all these people”. I’m not sure what her rant was about, but we chatted about the book she was reading about yoga.

  • • Not all our experiences with folks in the street went well- we were called the N word by an apparently colorblind man after my husband caught him trying to lift my thermal tea mug from an outside pocket of my bag while I was snapping photos of the Macys windows.

  • • And yet police presence was very high, including a young officers we overhead saying to his partner after assisting some tourist with directions “I’m getting better at small talk!” And his buddy agreed and when I smiled and laughed at their comment, he said “he’s kinda of a shy guy”

  • • Which reminds me to share that whenever we are doing street photography in any city in the world; one of us always watches the back of the other while shooting. This “awareness” usually results in us having almost not trouble wherever we are.

  • • And yet, this part of NYC seemed to have fewer folks hassling people or living in the streets than other US cities we’ve visited. And it seems local establishments do take some care of the people in their own neighborhoods

  • • You can’t rely on GPS to navigate while walking on the street, we used it in our hotel room to preview the route, then on the street used the easy grid pattern in Manhattan to navigate because the GPS has trouble

  • • I made a list of all our show and restaurant reservations including the street addresses and put it on my phone to allow for easier navigation around the area.

20221209 - New York City - 194.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 271.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 280.jpg 20221209 - New York City - 265.jpg 20221211 - New York City - 401.jpg
  • • The stands in Times Square were filled to the brim with Moroccans celebrating their advancement to the World Cup finals.

  • • We noticed almost no Chinese tourists. While in Quebec City in Oct they outnumbered all other tourists 2:1, their absence was keenly noticed here - whether that’s by choice due to publicity reaching China about the safety of US cities or China’s own travel policies at the moment, I’m not sure.

  • • And yet, the crowds were so thick over the weekend that one could barely move on the side walks, and for safety several roads around the largest attractions (such as the tree at Rockefeller center) were closed to vehicle traffic by local officials

  • We found our weekend in the city at Christmas to be busy, but full of good cheer and joy and as a “bucket list” event to see NYC at Christmastime, it was very special!
