Mexico City; A GoSeeItPeople Interview

March 22, 2025

When your daughter tells you she’s headed for a solo trip to Mexico City, which was recently listed as on of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world in Forbes , you worry a little. But the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and she has her mother’s planning skills and in the end she planned a safe and exciting itinerary for herself to take a break from the New England weather and practice her Spanish. She also is a chip off the block with her photography, like her dad, and shared some great photos of her February adventure. See our interview with E. and get some great suggestions for touring Mexico City and tips for solo travel anywhere!

GSIT: How did you decide on this destination? Why did you want to go?

I’ve been practicing my Spanish for several years, and taking lessons with a native Chilean speaker online. Although I went to Chile with my parents last year, I realized a solo trip to a South or Latin American city would force me to use more of my Spanish. Mexico City had a lot of interesting attractions and the weather was comfortable and much warmer than where I live in February. Mexico’s affordability fit my budget.

Avenida Paseo de la Reforma was opened as a pedestrian and bikeway on Sundays, a safe spot to get my run in!

GSIT: How did you plan your trip? Did you use a travel agent or tour?

I chose Mexico City after my mom’s local travel agent recommended it for a mother daughter birthday trip for my sister, the ideas of things to see and do seemed interesting, but I didn’t have the budget to book a high end bespoke trip, so I started doing my own research on Moon Guide to Mexico City and by staying in a shingle room with a private bath in a hostel rather than a hotel, and by joining local group tours rather than hiring a private guide, I could keep my trip affordable!.

A Group Tour in the Floating Markets

GSIT: Any tips for solo women?

  • I did research to determine the safer neighborhoods on reddit and other user forums

  • I stayed at a hostel in a private room is usually cheaper than a hotel, but much safer than a shared room. Additionally, there’s the possibility of connecting with other solo women or small groups for dinners or evenings out at nightclubs or shows. That’s safer than wandering the city alone at night.

  • Centro neighborhood with all of the major sites, was safe during the day, at night take precautions, other neighborhoods to stay are the Roma neighborhood, which gave hipster vibes, Cundessa, which was leafier and more upscale, and Polanco neighborhood with upscale hotels and prices to match and the Coyoacan, a Colonial and bohemian neighborhood a bit further from town,

  • I often ate street food where I saw they were doing good business with the locals, so I didn’t have to eat alone in a restaurant and I knew the food would turn over quickly and be safe to eat.

  • I took group tours for many of my nighttime activities, such as a Mexican Wrestling show and a pub crawl. It was safer to be with a group and guide than try these activities alone.

  • I took precautions to carry my valuables in a money belt, didn’t wear expensive clothes or jewelry, and used dedicated “women only” cars on the public transit.

  • I kept my phone tucked away and stepped into the store or cafe if I needed to check directions rather than be distracted on the street.

  • I identified someone at home to have my location via my phone, and I checked in when i was safely back at my room each night.

GSIT: What did you do while you were on this trip?

Terraza Catedral: Sweeping views of the city from the rooftop (no cover on Thursdays, when they have live jazz, DJ on the weekends) and it didn’t feel like a tourist trap.

I also looked for vendores or small shops with a line and had no problems despite my sensitive stomach! And most foods were not that spicy unless you add the various salsa offered.

GSIT: What surprised you about this place? Is there a "don't miss it" attraction?

The weather in Mexico City was cooler at night than I expected. I found it really easy to get around using Uber and public transit, although knowing Spanish did help!

The Castillo de Chapultepec was a don’t miss attraction, and going early allowed me to get good photos.

Having the Castillo de Chapultepec to myself for quiet contemplation and tourist free photos!

GSIT: What tips would you give for someone who wants to visit? Anything special you should pack?

Pack layers for mid 70’s during the day to 50’s at night. Mexico uses the same power outlets, so you won’t need an adaptor.

Try to get Mexican Pesos in smaller denominations of 200 peso or less before you leave, the ATMs dispense 500 peso bills, which are too big to break at local shops and vendors. Larger purchases at shops and restaurants are easily made with a credit card.

GSIT: Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about your trip?

I was fortunate to have terrific local guides, and I felt very safe at all times, and I could have spent more than a week visiting!

Thanks, E, for sharing your solo journey to Cuidad de Mexico with GoSeeIt Travel…I’m proud to see another generation of my own family venturing out into the world and sharing those adventures with others! She reminds us all that travel is accessible at all budget levels and for any traveler that has the wanderlust!

Seeing Puma in the Wild in Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park...

February 8, 2025

…And It Wasn’t Even the Scariest Thing We Saw!

After coming up empty during ten days trekking puma in Patagonia a year ago (see our trip report here) …I was delighted to see puma in the wild on the remote Osa peninsula in Costa Rica! And it wasn’t even one of the top three SCARIEST things we saw while trekking in the Corcovado National Park, at San Pedrillo Station!

First, a note about what wasn't scary at all…planning this trip! I plan a lot of our trips and many times I use trusted travel advisors. For this trip I relied on the experts at Active Travels, a membership travel consultancy. As a milestone birthday trip for my daughter, I wanted to offer her 4 or 5 potential destinations, and Active Travels presented a list of options based on her interests…wildlife/nature, or food/city culture. Despite Costa Rica not being a “new” destination for her (see our trip reports here) she chose warm and wildlife, over a city trip. Active Travels took care of all the details, including all transfers and small plane flights to the remote Drake Bay on the Osa. After two nights in the capital city of San Jose, we settled in for 5 nights at Aguilla de Osa, a remote, all inclusive ecolodge perched above the Pacific Ocean.

At Aguilla De Osa, everything is all included, congregate meals in an open air dining room with wildlife and Pacific views and daily wildlife excursions with expert guides. We booked a flight and never had to think about another detail! We had a choice of 3 lovely options for each meal, and several excursions to explore this wild area on foot, by boat or even in kayaks. Being freed from the logistics, my daughter and I had time to unwind, and reconnect!

A small group prepares to hike at San Pedrillo Station

The first scary thing was having to cross an outlet of the tidal river to get to the trail. We rolled up our pants, and waded through following our guide, Gabriel, without a thought. Didn’t feel scary at all!

We happily followed guide, Gabriel, never thinking about what might be IN the water!

It wasn’t until we returned from our hike after crossing back in hip deep water that we spotted a fifteen foot crocodile floating in the ocean just yards away from where we just crossed!

View fullsize IMG_015902.JPG
View fullsize IMG_015910.JPG

Another scary thing that happened was with the cutest, not the scary looking animals! Capuchin monkeys are so much fun to watch! It’s a bit of a strain on the neck as you look up into the trees to watch them move and feed on fruit up in the canopy. But they are so playful, fun and social! I didn’t expect them to be dangerous!

While watching one monkey frolic through the canopy, as he moved on, a huge palm frond fell from the tree, landing on the trail, nearly hitting our group on our heads!

If you haven’t seen a whole palm frond, they are much heavier than they look and have a hard spine! Thankfully, all of us jumped back and no one was hurt!

The scariest thing that happened, was actually with one of the silliest looking animals, a pecary. A pig like mammal that lives in the park, they mostly forage for insects and other tasty morsels in the ground. They move through the forest in groups that can be as large as hundreds of individuals. They are one of the rarest animals in the Costa Rica and we were so grateful to spot them on our hike. Early in our walk, we watched them moving through the woods, and while at first they seemed quite docile, Gabriel explained, they can be dangerous. As a large group, if threatened, they can take down much larger animals! Later in our walk, a little behind schedule because we had stopped for so many amazing wildlife sightings, we were hustling quickly on the trail, trying to get back to the boat to return us to the lodge for lunch.

Unfortunately, the pecary interpreted our speed as a threat, and suddenly started making clicking sounds to gather themselves, amassing as groups of 4-8, gathering until there were more than 50 pecary on the trail in front of us, moving towards us quite menacingly!

Thankfully, like most of the great guides, Gabriel knew exactly what to do, and told the group to back up a bit, and he took a step towards them with his spotting scope tripod held high, he made a loud yell, and the pecary scattered into the woods, clicking with alarm. Much to Gabriel’s chagrin, none of us had our video running during our hasty retreat and we failed to capture his brave vanquishing of the peccary! It’s the only time I’ve had any animal on any of our safaris threaten us on foot and it did get the adrenaline pumping! (There have been several times when elephants have blocked or challenged our safari vehicles in Africa though!) My daughter and I reminded each other of our long standing family travel motto …

It’s not and adventure until peril is involved!

Fortunately, we were never in any REAL danger, and in good hands with professional guides and a comfortable ecolodge with top notch hospitality and thanks to our travel advisors, nothing to worry about except soaking up the full sensory experience of this biodiverse and beautiful remote spot!

See below for more of our wildlife sightings during this trip Much thanks to fellow traveler, Ian Porteous, for his generosity with his photos. Jeff, my regular photographer and travel compadre, was not with me on this trip and I’m grateful someone captured the “closeups” of the animals at a distance. All the other photos and vidoes are my own, or my daughters.

New Years, New Places and New Faces

January 2, 2025

One of the greatest joys of travel is the people we meet along the way. There are the wonderful folks we meet in a destination, the talented people who plan or guide our adventures and but also the fellow travelers we’ve met along the journey. Whether folks are in our lives for an hour or forever, each person we’ve meet along the way has made all of our travels so much richer! Here a few of the people who made our travels extra special this year!

An Incredible Fixer

Our driver (L) and “fixer” Pablo (R) had us covered when the governments in the US and Chile warned against our planned destinations due to wild fires. Pablo helped us make alternate plans!

January and February we spent weeks exploring Antarctica, Chile and Argentina. On the recommendation of our AirBNB owner, I contacted her local driver to arrange transfers and local tours during our extended stay in Santiago. Not only did Pablo get us everywhere we needed to go, but he also coordinated last minute plans to visit a Chilean Winery for us when wildfires prevented us from visiting the places we’d originally planned. His warm hospitality and insider connections made our trip perfect and we remain friendly still, messaging opposite weather reports to each other regularly from opposite hemispheres.

The Laugh We Will Never Stop Hearing

Smiling and laughing, “a wealth of Silver Sea passengers” explore around the Southern Ocean

Before we even met Angus we heard his laugh…a New Castle UK native, his booming laugh was infectious to all who heard it, and we all heard it! We met Angus aboard the Silver Sea Cloud in January to visit Antarctica with his gracious and stylish wife, Dwina, who were members of our excursion group, and they made our experience was vastly improved by sharing the most amazing adventures together, laughing all the way!

An Eclectic Collection of Humans to Witness a Once in a Lifetime Eclipse

Family and new friends gathered to experience the eclipse

Our daughter’s home was on the path of totality for the April 2024 Eclipse. A once in a lifetime event, her home quickly became a hostel full of unrelated people bonding over an incredible celestial event. As I whipped up vats of chili and pans of lasagna, sharing the stunning moment with complete strangers, bonded us all in that moment forever.

A Family That Comes with a Car

Minis lakeside in Vermont

In October, we direct our tiny car north to Vermont to meet our Mini Cooper Family. No two are the same, and that can be said for the cars (with their unique colors, mods and wraps) and also for the people who cross the spectrum from all places and all walks of life. The happy family reunion is better every year, as we zip around Vermont with a different group each year, bonding over a love of a car and driving and exploring new things and meeting new people on the road ahead!

The Travel Agent Who Got Us Home When We Had To Be Home

After years of planning trips virtually, I got to meet my travel agent, Jay Paul, when we visited Las Vegas last year.

A year ago, we traveled to las Vegas to meet the man who has planned our trips for years now. No request is too much for Jay Paul (crusieplanners) and nearly every trip goes off without a hitch. Having dinner and getting to meet and thank the man in person was a highlight of the past year, but it was his assistance at the worst of times that really made me grateful for Jay.

When a family emergency required us to return from Dubai immediately, one call, and he made sure when we arrived in Montreal, flying 24 hours in the last 36 hours, there was someone ready with a town car to take us immediately to our loved ones. We couldn’t think straight after that many hours on a plane and out of our mind with worry, and thanks to Jay, we didn’t have to!

2025

What’s next, where will we go? This is what’s ahead and we look forward to seeing who we meet on all of these adventures! Keep an eye out for our photos and stories about these places and let us know where you are headed!

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Eco Camp on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, on the Pacific Ocean

A birthday safari with my daughter, we will travel to the Osa Peninsula to explore the Corcovado National Park and Pacific Ocean from a remote eco camp.

A prior trip to the Osa (click here)

Art Museums in Western MA

Several interesting art museums are located within a days drive of our home. The Norman Rockwell Museum, Eric Carle Museum of Children’s book Art and the Mass Museum of Contemporary Art. An off season getaway will let us stay at a popular historic hotel as a base for exploring.

Broadway Shows in NYC

My third trip with CTI travel (Custom Travel Insider) to NYC for Broadway, this time with a friend, we keep coming back to this tour group because of their ability to get great tickets to the hottest Broadway shows, but also for the unique “behind the scenes” access to meet performers and visit backstage at historic theaters.

Prior Trip to NYC (click here)

Lakes District, Great Britain

An overdue visit to a British family member is turning into a family reunion “hen party” for a group of relatives in the pretty Lakes District in the north of the UK.

Uganda, Africa

Uganda will be our 5th trip with Natural Habitat Adventures. Their expertly guided trips focus on wildlife and nature. This photo is from our trip to Patagonia with them.

A make up trip to Africa (interrupted due to a family emergency) to trek to see gorillas and also safari both in the Rift Valley and along the shores of the upper Nile River. Our trip is planned with Natural Habitat Adventures, who always curate amazing wildlife trips and attract people with a shared love of animals.

Athens Greece and Greek Islands

Our travel crew has been to Hawaii (pictured) the Caribbean and Vancouver, next up- Greece!

A more than 10 year friendship with a fellow travel planner always results in a trip filled with friends, excel spread sheets full of exciting adventures and more belly laughs than anyone can count. 2025 send us to Athens Greece, a huge Airbnb booked for our group of 9 and a nine night cruise aboard Celebrity Infinity to the Greek Islands will be our next adventure.

Bucket List Adventures Ahead…

Because everyone is traveling again and hotels and tours at popular destinations fill fast, we’ve already booked these bucket list destinations in 2026 and 2027. What’s on your “book it” list?

Milan, Italy- Winter Olympics with Road Trips Sports

Trekking and kayaking in New Zealand with New Zealand Trails

UnCruise Adventure trip to Dutch Harbor and the Aleutian Islands

Prior Trip to Alaska (click here)

Haines AK in 2018, after 2 trips to AK and 3 trips on an UnCruise Adventures vessel, with guided kayak, hiking, and wildlife adventures, we are excited to be booked on one of their newest adventures, which includes the Aleutian islands
