Ocean Cruising, What's New?

April 5, 2023

It’s been a minute since some of us have taken an Ocean Cruise. The last time cruises were big news it was about quarantines and testing. Well, we’ve taken two ocean cruises this winter and we’ve learned a lot of things have changed to make cruising vacations easier.

So What’s NEW?

View of the Aqua Theater onboard Allure f the Seas

Bad News Could Mean Better Prices

With all the negative attention during the pandemic, and with most of the people who shifted dates from canceled cruises having completed those cruises in 2022, occupancy is available again, and I’m personally seeing price specials for cruises coming into my inbox.

Expedition cruises that are usually taken by retired folks seem to be offering specials, so although it may not be the sort of ocean cruise you imagined with water slides and buffets, but this might be a good time to book an expedition cruise Galapagos, Costa Rica, Iceland or Alaska on a smaller ship.

Ocean cruises that typically catered to older adults, some of whom are still reluctant to travel, are also showing special prices and availability for 2023 and 2024. Check for good prices on longer cruises that are usually popular with retired people, including repositioning cruises.

If you want shorter ocean cruises on the newest family style ships at popular holiday and vacation times, You’ll find a bit more competition and possibly higher prices for those! younger folks and families are anxious to travel together again.

Covid testing has eased for most cruises

Most of the Covid Testing/Vaccination requirements have been eased

I’m sharing what I’ve learned, generally, talking to travelers on many different brands of ocean cruises, and from my own experiences. When it comes to health and safety, always refer to the Cruise Contract you sign for the cruise line you are sailing!

Nearly all of the major cruise lines have relaxed pre sailing testing requirements, and many have also eliminated vaccination requirements. This makes it easier to book a last minute cruise or invite a group to cruise. A few ports, including Columbia are still requiring testing, so be sure to check your itinerary and the requirements for each port. Also, many cruises repositioning their ships across the Atlantic and Pacific still requiring testing to avoid outbreaks on board during long stretches at sea.

See our post about our favorite travel apps here

There’s An App For That!

Most of the major cruise lines have introduced an app where you’ll set up an account and enter your pre-cruise information and can book your activities and pay for excursions or extras like specialty dining and drink packages.

Once on board, many of them will allow you to message others in your party through ships wifi without having to buy an internet package on board.

The app will also list all the venues for dining available and list activities and shows happening on board.

The days of standing shoulder to shoulder wearing your life vest are over! Today drills are virtual on the app or on smaller ships, a staff member will walk you to your cabin, passing your muster station, so you know where it’s located.

Safety Drills Are Safer and Easier

Most cruises adopted relaxed rules about the traditional “Muster Drill” during the pandemic. Now cruises are allowed to let passengers access safety information, such as what to do with the kids, what the emergency horn sounds like and how to put on the PFD right on their app and then passengers just have to take a trip to their muster station at their leisure to be “checked out” by a safety officer. Instead of gathering all the passengers in one place at one time, this flow of passengers at their own convenience prevents crowding, and is far more convenient for passengers.

But beware- those who don’t show up to check in with the safety officer will be compelled to attend a compulsory safety meeting during the first day of the cruise, which will not be at the passengers convenience!

More Classes and Categories to Choose From

Feels like there are now dozens of choices in cruise ship cabins now. Categories in the past were based n whether the cabin was “inside” with no window or view, has a window/port hole or “ocean view” or “ocean view balcony” which means it had a private balcony. Today, ships are being built with all kinds of cabin categories, which include interior view balconies overlooking courtyards, virtual balconies with a huge monitor that streams the outside view, smaller single cabins for solo travelers and family suites with extra bunk rooms attached. All of these are designed to meet the needs of the diverse group cruising today, but it also makes pricing a cruise a little more challenging. The first price advertised will always be the interior cabin, and once you start looking at all these other categories prices will rise.

SO many categories and so many “classes” of service, I suggest using a good travel advisor to help sort out the choices!

During the cruise ship building boom, a robust middle class was finding cruising for the first time, and ships were designed as one big egalitarian experience. Today, cruise lines have discovered they can create classes and special experiences that they can be more profitable. So you’ll see experiences, that were previously only available to people who purchased large suites, such as priority boarding, spa access, special dining, butler services or theater seating being added to what were previously “regular” cabins in order to charge more for the experience. If you read what is “added” on, often it’s of no extra cost to the cruise line- reserving some seats in a theater, or setting aside a dining room, but you’ll be paying more for those amenities. That devalues the suites on board who are now “sharing” those amenities with people who didn’t buy a suite, and it also makes the experience less comfortable for people who don’t choose to upgrade by crowding dining rooms, extending boarding times, and less choices of seats at the theater. So decide for yourself if those amenities are worth it for you. I also suggest working with a cruise specialist who has experience with many ships and can tell you if it’s worth upgrading for the amenities you’ll get.

See our list of preferred travel advisors here

Small ship expedition and river cruising is growing in popularity

You don’t have to sail with crowds to have a great cruise

You can have an amazing cruise on a large ship, they are specially designed to spread crowds around the ship by offering varied activities to a divers group of cruisers. Smaller ships offer a more intimate experience and the ability to get into out of the way and remote places. Choosing the right ship for the destination and experience you want is the most important part of planning your cruise!

My Favorite Travel Apps

March 1, 2023

Which travel apps work for me? For all the debate about how cell phones are ruining people's trips, are we putting too much focus on posting our travels to Instagram and Tik Tok? But I have found that my cell phone and the apps on it, is an essential travel tool!

There are obvious apps you’ll find in every list of recommended travel apps. Here are the ones every traveler should have.

  • Airline: Your Airline’s app will usually be the first place you’ll see changes or delays to your flight. It’s also a place to hold your boarding pass, and make changes if your travel plans change. Always join the miles/loyalty to get better treatment from the airline. And if you want to us inflight wifi, you’ll probably have to join.

  • Maps : Be sure to have your favorite Maps App downloaded In addition to using this for directions, its a good source to find dining near where you are and you can use the “Save” section to save all the destinations for a place you plan visit. With all the hotels, restaurants, and museums you plan to visit saved, its easy to access them again on the road when you need directions.

  • Cruise lines app and Theme park apps: If you have a plan to cruise or visit a theme park, each has it’s own app where you can plan your days, make reservations for dining or rides, and it also serves as your ticket or boarding pass.

  • Google translate : If you are traveling internationally, this one can help you translate addresses, to pass to cab drivers, or to ask a question to folks when you don’t hare a language. You can even take a photo of a sign and it will translate the sign.

  • Ride share app: Download your favorite and make sure you credit card info is up to date before you travel.

Another use for google maps- creating a list of places I hope to visit in the area, and use them as a list in the “saved” destinations.

Then there are the apps that make your trip more pleasant/healthier:

  • Yoga/breathe app: Travel can turn me into a pretzel…off my regular food, squeezed into an economy seat, and miles of walking, I need a good stretch and sometimes to “zone” out during stressful delays! This app is a favorite of mine, for a small fee annually, I can use pre recorded classes, even off line, to stretch or just breathe.

  • Music app spa music or ocean sounds playlist : It’s great to play your music, but downloading a couple of hours of spa music or water sounds can be more pleasant for sleeping. With the spa music and noise cancelling, you can almost completely ignore those obnoxious credit card announcements in flight!

For a small annual fee I can download classes to take on the go, or just use a meditation during stressful situations on the road. A free version allows streaming of limited classes with wifi or cell service.

Apps that Help Me Explore my Destination

  • Seek I Naturalist: A favorite of mine, hold the camera up to any plant or animal, this amazing app will use the internet to identify what you are seeing 8 levels right down to the species. If you don’t have internet service, you can take a photo and use service to identify the animal or plant later.

  • Open table: I’ll use this app to help me find dining and make reservations ahead of time for popular places

  • Local Transit Apps: I’ll download the app for public transit in the cities I visit. These will often have more up to date info than a general maps app and you can often buy tickets right on the app and skip the kiosk lines.

  • Today Tix: This ticket reseller is a bit of a disruptor, with low fees, but you pick your show, but not your seats, you’ll get a notification that they have tickets for you and where they are located, and you’ll download them right to your phone. This service will allow you to choose a Broadway (and shows in other destinations) without waiting in multiple box office lines and without the fees associated with the big ticket brokers.

  • Rick Steves: For European destinations, nobody provides better audio tours of museums, churches and squares we all love to visit that Rick Steves.

All of these beautiful animals, flora and insects were identified by Seek I Naturalist App ( free for basic use) once I returned from my trip. Download it yourself and identify all of these Amazon Inhabitants!

Free for basic use, you can also upgrade for more services, but the basic one works for me to keep track of where I’ve been and wanderlust over where to go next!

The Ones That Help With Future Plans and Reminisce

  • Been app: This fun app allows you to enter all the countries in the world where you have “been”. There’s also areas to put “regions” or US states. Filling in the

  • maps is fun, and i like dreaming about where to go next.

  • Picture app: So many ways to put those photos to work for you…I hate thinking about all those photos trapped in phones! Use them! Your photo app can create little videos reviewing your trip with the photos from your camera roll. You can use the Shutterfly app to create travel books or calendars to commemorate a special trip.

I created a Shutterfly book as a gift to friends after visits cross country to each others homes/

Disney World News and Tips for Right Now!

News! Fireworks shows are changing at EPCOT and MK

Both fireworks shows in Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are being changed soon, so if these were favorites get back there soon to see them. I personally found both a bit disappointing, so I look forward to the return of older shows or new creations or seasonal shows.

View of fireworks from BEHIND Cinderella’s Caslt

TIP! Where to see the fireworks

In Magic Kingdom- Sitting behind the castle for the current fireworks show turned out to be an interesting perspective. While we couldn’t see the “projections” on the castle and pyrotechnics emanating from the castle that folks in the crowds in front could see, we had a completely unobstructed view of the aerial fireworks with Beast and Belle’s castle in the fore ground, and it was far less crowded.

For EPCOT, much of the action takes place on barges in the lagoon, so be sure you can see the “face” of the screen on the barge, or you really won’t see much of the show. Unfortunately, this is the complaint about this show, because there are so few areas to truly “see” the show, and during the day the barges look unattractive.

View of Tron Light Cycle Ride from the People Mover in Tomorrowland MK

NEWS! Tron opens soon!

The lights are on, and the cars are running! It’s been reported that Tron is scheduled to open April 4th. Seems like before then there may be some of the “soft openings” that Disney is famous for! If you’ll be in Disney soon, wander by and see if you can get in ahead of the “official” opening. I’ve heard Annual Pass Holders and Cast Members will get early rides too.

View of Tron Light Cycle from Tomorrowland Speedway

TIP! How to ride Tron

When Tron opens, its expected to be a blockbuster in Magic Kingdom. It’s expected there won’t be a standby line, and the attraction will use the Boarding Group system being used right now for Guardians of the Galaxy in EPCOT. It’s also expected that you’ll be able to buy Lightening Lane access for Tron. If this attraction is important to you, you can purchase this LL access at 7 AM if you are staying in a Disney property and at the time of Official Park Opening for off site guests. Boarding Groups are offered at 7 AM for everyone, and again at 1 PM if there is space available. Be prepared ahead of time with a park reservation for MK to get on the app at exactly 7 AM and refresh immediately and don’t hesitate, it’s nt unusual for all the Boarding groups to be gone 7:01 AM for a popular attraction!

NEWS! The 50th Anniversary and 100 Year Anniversary

Hollywood Studios

Disney loves a party and it’s wrapping up a multi year 50th anniversary this spring. I’d love to stay “50” for as long as Disney has! The color for the theme is gold and blue. The next celebration is the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Company (the movies) and it will be characterized by “platinum” color themes including new costumes for the big five characters.

TIP! Get your Merch!

The 50th themed merchandise will be going away soon, and the 100th themed merchandise is already available. If you see it, get it when you see it. I had got some fun “ears” in the 50th theme colors, but they were lost during hurricane Ian at my mothers home. I had hoped to replace them, but this year they were offering a different style for the 50th anniversary that I didn’t like as well.

Welcome to the World!

NEWS! New (old) leadership at Walt Disney are making some changes

Recent leadership changes have happened to address some of the problems that have been happening at WDW. I don’t want to get too into the weeds of corporate politics, but Annual Pass Holders have been dissatisfied and the numbers have not been pleasing to investors, changes were made.

Tips! Changes mean some immediate benefits for Disney’s best customers

There are more benefits to staying on Walt Disney World property again. The parking fees ($25 a day) for parking your car at a resort where you might be already paying $250- 1000 to stay have been eliminated. Extended Magic hours in the evenings for some parks are offered to guests of Disney Deluxe Accommodations and early Morning Magic hours (parks open 30 minutes early) still remain for all Disney Resort Guests. Annual Pass Holders have had park reservations requirements eased a bit, so they can visit a park for the late afternoon or evening or dinner without a park reservation.

NEWS! Skyliner is off line for most of January

Skyliner above ‘Paris” in EPCOT

So the Skyliner is a new Disney transportation service (aerial trams, like the gondolas at ski mountains) from EPCOT International Entrance and Disney Hollywood Studios to some resorts. Its a lot fun to ride, and connects the Art of Animation and Pop Century, Caribbean Beach and new Riviera Resorts with these parks. But the downside is you have to get off the Skyliner and connect at the Caribbean Beach hub to go from the other resorts to one of the two parks served by it.

Pop Century Resort is connected to EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios via the Skyliner, but you have make a transfer at Caribbean Beach

Tips! Stay at Caribbean Beach For Direct Skyliner Access

Caribbean Beach (moderate) resort is where you can ride directly to DHS or EPCOT on the Skyliner, if you’d like to stay at a Skyliner connected resort. Riviera connects directly to EPCOT but not to DHS, and both Animation and Pop Century (Value) resorts require a change at Caribbean Beach for either park.

NEWS! Guardians of the Galaxy is Fun!

Two thumbs up from us!

TIPS! To Ride Guardians of the Galaxy

As of this writing, there is still no “standby” line for GOG, which means, all guests with an EPCOT park reservation can log on to the app at 7 AM for a Boarding Group. During our visit, they were “unavailable” after 7:01 AM, so have more than one member of your party ready to book on the app and refresh right at 7 AM. If things are running smoothly, another round of boarding groups may become available at 1 PM, but you must be in the park to access them on the app. A friend recently reported trying “just for the heck of it” at 2:30 PM when they arrived and were able to get a boarding group, so keep trying.

Another option is to purchase Lightening Lane access ( although you’ll miss a lot of the “pre show” doing this), available at 7 AM for guests of Disney Hotels, and at park opening time for other guests. These did not “sell out” as quickly during our January visit, but at busier times, non Disney resort guests may not have any available by park opening time.

Where we get our News and Tips!

I rely on a variety of sources for my information about WDW. Working with a Disney Specialist Travel Agent is critical. There are several good ones reviewed online. My preferred travel advisors and Consultants can be found here. I usually book my own trips, doing a lot of my own research with a few trusted sources, Mickey Visit website, Undercover Tourist, the DIS Boards.

My favorite source for decades has been the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World for unbiased, evidence based advice. I subscribe to their Touring Plans website during a year when I plan to visit Walt Disney World, to access the detailed Crowd Calendars in advance before reserving my parks. (I’m not paid or given any consideration for recommending them or anyone else to you) Several other sites, such as Undercover Tourist and Mickey Visit have added free popular “Crowd Calendars” but many of them are more general, whereas UG to WDW has evidence based data collected by their researchers for every day based on park events, regional school vacations and the attendance data they’ve collected for years. And its dynamic; as a subscriber for a nominal annual fee, I get regular email “updates” of changes in expected attendance for the parks I’m watching.

Touring Plans also provide a service that allows subscribers to see an interactive map of every WDW resort with pictures of the exact (or very similar) view from that room, and they give advice on best, quietest and most conveniently located rooms. They’ll even fax your request for specific rooms to WDW for you before your trip. Our requests were granted, although, there are no guarantees.

Another Unofficial Guide developed tool is the Lines App, which was the “OG” for making a touring plan before WDW developed their own app. WDW’s app allows you to use their free Genie service to plan your day and has an interactive map with wait times. We found wait times on the Disney app to be less accurate than the Lines App and the Lines App’s customizable touring plans were superior to WDW’s free Genie, because they incorporated what we wanted to do, not just general recommendations of where Disney wanted to send us.

If you are headed to the “WORLD” soon…we wish you safe travels and the most magical of visits!
