Look who came out to see if a moose cow was calling! It was just our guide, Don Hibbs, owner and operator of Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps, imitating a cow during the moose rut period that lured this big male out of the woods.

Moose Safari Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps

October 2, 2020

Canceled, postponed, vouchered. I keep file folders of all the trips we have planned and like most people who rely on travel for their work, we’ve stashed those folders and had to pivot. This fall that meant looking for things to do closer to home. There are moose near our Maine home, we saw one once 30 years ago. But it was always on our bucket list to go out and see moose in their natural habitat, not just one dashing across the road. It occurred to us that if we had to cancel everything far from our home, then so must have the folks who would ordinarily fill northern Maine’s wildlife hunting and fishing camps.

We were able to get a last minute cancellation at the popular Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps, during the height of fall foliage, where owners Don and Angel Hibbs welcome guests interested in a truly natural experience, fishing, hunting, paddling, hiking and heading out at dawn to spot crepuscular moose.

Our “clean” van as we enter the Jo Mary Road to pay our toll. Before long we had enough dirt on the bumper to plant seedlings!

Of course the first challenge would be getting there! NLWC is 3 and half hours away from our Maine home. Nahmakanta Wilderness Area is managed by the state of Maine and accessed through a nearly 30 mile private dirt logging logging road, called the Jo Mary Road. Without an SUV, we would be driving our 12 year old Honda Odyssey van. We arrived to the pay station uneventfully, paid for our pass, and headed out on the hard packed, very dusty logging road. While most guests of NLWC and other people enjoying the wilderness area bring an SUV, we had no trouble with our mini van making it to the camp.

If you are without a vehicle or have one that won’t make the trip, you can book a flight on a seaplane to fly in, which I think would be a pretty spectacular way to arrive!

Besides the unusual availability of last minute reservations, some changes due to Covid 19 included; no congregate meals, (dinners were served to your individual cabin) and masking and using an outside picnic table for camp business. The activities at the camp that are available lend themselves to safe, outside social distancing- fishing, hunting, paddling, hiking trails (including part of the Maine Appalachian Trail)

Other guests were there for the opening of grouse hunting season and for fishing, but our goal was to see moose in the wild, so we made sure to engage Don ahead of time to guide us through the Nahkamanta Wilderness area in a canoe so we might see moose. The NLWC was a relaxing and beautiful place to base our explorations.

Once we arrived, we made arrangements to leave camp at 5 AM the next morning to catch the moose out during their most active time, at dawn. We drove about 45 minutes to a rustic parking lot, parked and walked in silence in the dark for another mile and then slipped quietly into a canoe to seek moose out on one of the many waterways of this wilderness area.

Anytime we’ve traveled to see animals in the wild, we accept that we may not, a wilderness is not a zoo, and animals live on their own schedules, but often the landscapes are an attraction themselves, such as this beautiful creek where we were paddling on at dawn.

Thanks to our guide, Don, who was expert at knowing where to look, paddling silently, and knowing what noises to make to attract the rutting bull moose, we were very fortunate to have several sightings of these majestic animals.

On our first trip into a hidden brook that Don knows well, where he keeps a canoe stashed, we entered the water at the first light of day. We were so lucky that when Don would call like a female moose or swish his paddle in a way that sounded just like a cow moose walking in the water, it was only a matter of minutes before we’d hear some branches cracking as a bull would make it’s way to investigate.

We would hear a some crashing or crunching of branches before we’d see a huge rack of antlers appear above the grasses. The moose would look and listen in a state of slight confusion for a moment or two, as if saying “I thought I heard a cow moose out here?” before wandering back into the thicket.

While “waiting” for moose to appear, we enjoyed the spectacular foliage and the utter isolation of the area, and we spotted other wildlife too, such as this beaver who did not approve of our visit and let us know with a hearty slap of his tail!

Just around the bend from the beaver sighting, we noted one of the bulls we’d spotted earlier decided to cross the brook, affording us a nice view of the moose in the water.

In just a few hours, we saw 4 bull moose, and heard two others; a big bull who wouldn’t fall for Don’s tricks and female (or another guide?) in the distance calling. By midmorning I was wondering if this was a Disney “Jungle Cruise” where the animals just appear beside you boat! Certainly, we might have seen moose by the side of the road, but there was something absolutely magical about being in the woods at dawn, in complete silence, gliding along in a canoe at water level and experiencing these huge animals in the wild. It didn’t hurt that the foliage and low morning light created some spectacular landscapes!

The next morning, we were out again at dawn, this time a little closer to camp, on a pond with low water due to the drought in Maine. This made it harder to “hide” the canoe by the shore, and the moose found our presence more obvious, we heard at least one moose in the woods and saw one very young moose emerge for a moment.

Don decided to move us to nearby Pollywog Pond to see if deeper waters might allow us a closer look at any animals there. We didn’t spot an moose there, but enjoyed the bird life and beaver lodges as well as the glorious autumn colors!

When we weren’t exploring the waters for moose, we were relaxing back at camp in our comfortable cabin, hiking many of the trails nearby, paddling on the lake or enjoying a campfire.

It’s possible to come face to face with wildlife in the Sea of Cortez

Sea of Cortez- Under the Sea

February 12, 2020

The Sea Of Cortez, which is a huge gulf between the Baja California Peninsula and mainland Mexico is often referred to as the Aquarium of the World and sometimes, Galapagos of Mexico. We spent a week aboard the UnCruise Safari Endeavour, a small expedition ship exploring the lower part of the Sea of Cortez, from La Paz almost to Loreto. What we discovered was an interesting dichotomy; a dry desert environment on land surrounded by one of the richest marine environments we’ve ever visited! A place where we were able to snorkel among dozens of different species of marine plants, fish and animals, including a few marine mammals!

The Safari Endeavour

To find excursions in the Sea of Cortez, you’ll need to get to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, which usually means flying to Los Cabos on the southern end of Baja Sur. From there the towns of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose Del Cabo, or further north in La Paz and even Loreta, which are accessible via a recently improved highway. You can find a variety of outfitters that will get you out on the water to explore wildlife. Puerto Escondido on the other side of the peninsula is where you can find excursions out onto Bahia Magdalena for Grey Whale excursions. (To see our report about the marine mammals we encountered click here) We had the advantage of being on a small expedition ship with a loose itinerary based on weather and where the wildlife might be and occasionally to dodge private yacht “pirates” moored up where we were scheduled to be!

Our itinerary aboard the Safari Endeavour brought us to places that are difficult to reach, but worth the effort!

Before you get into the water to explore; there are a couple of things to be prepared for.

Bundle up!

The water might not be the tropical temperature you might be expecting. Year round water temps range from low 60’s to low 80’s depending on the time of year and location. We were outfitted with very snug heavy wet suits to tolerate the cold for an hour long snorkel. Getting into these proved to be comical. Imagine a middle age snake with a middle trying to slither into tight neoprene! Eventually we were able get the wet suits zipped by performing some downward dog and stretching the suit and with the help of fellow adventurers. We found wearing a slippery rash guard underneath also helped!

All geared up and ready to go!

There are so many beautiful distractions underwater, but after about an hour in the 70 degree ocean, we were ready to get out and warm up in one of the two on board hot tubs.

Wear good footwear!

Our guides reminded us regularly that although those beaches look sandy, up close we would see the nettles from cactus and bones and shells from spiky sea life can be very hard on your feet. We brought good closed toe amphibious water shoes to protect our feet.

It looks like sand, but it’s really lots of pretty sharp shells, coral and bones!

Remember Wildlife is Wild!

In general, its a good idea to keep your hands to yourself and that’s especially true in the Sea of Cortez where many animals are venomous to the touch and because many areas are either Mexican National or State parks with stiff penalties for harming or removing anything from the parks! Occasionally, some wild life will get very close, as was the case of the juvenile sea lions at Los Isolates off of Isla Partida

A sea lion gets a good look at the sous chef from the Safari Endeavour, who joined us out on our snorkel excursion.

Incredibly playful and swift in the water, I’m certain the sea lions wondered why were so slow and encumbered in the water!

Some of the juvenile sea lions enjoyed trying to play with our colorful snorkeling gear!

With the right preparation from our guides, we were able to enjoy all the amazing wildlife in the Sea of Cortez, while ensuring our safety and the safety and sustainability of the wildlife we encountered.

We will explore the unique desert environment of the Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez islands in a future post. Be sure to follow our Twitter and FaceBook pages for more!

Baja Sur CA Mexico: Sometimes the Wildlife Comes to You!

February 5, 2020

Suddenly, a huge pod of hundreds of common dolphin headed towards our ship like an invading naval armada.

Sometimes you go looking for wildlife, and sometimes it comes looking for you!

We were aboard UnCruise Safari Endeavour, a small expedition ship with just 48 passengers and a half dozen excellent naturalist guides, traveling from La Paz into the Sea of Cortez for a week of wild life spotting and active adventure. The “critter cruising” we were enjoying was a planned activity. The guides were out on deck with binoculars helping is to spot marine mammals and birds as we cruised the waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Captain was open to taking the vessel wherever we could safely go to see marine mammals. During our week, we didn’t see any whales in the Sea of Cortez, but we saw dolphin nearly every day.

Once the pod of dolphin caught up with us, it became obvious they wanted to use the bow wake of the ship as a “rocket booster” to make swimming in the Sea of Cortez even easier than they already make it look. For almost an hour, our ship felt like one of the pod, with us sailing with this enormous pod of dolphin leaping out of the water and frolicking alongside! One of our guides explained the lack of whales and amazing amount of dolphin we saw as “sometimes the wildlife comes to you and sometimes it doesn’t” This is an excellent mantra for any safari experience and it certainly applied to our time in Baja Sur.

Sometimes the wildlife comes to you, and sometimes it doesn’t.

We chose to use UnCruise in the Sea of Cortez in mid January because we’d hoped to see migrating whales. Many species of whales, some which we’d seen in Alaska on an UnCruise in August 2018, make a migration to the southern Pacific to mate and give birth to their young in warmer waters. (see our UnCruise SE Alaska trip report https://www.goseeittravel.com/uncruise-southeast-alaska click here)

Unfortunately, during our trip, the whales hadn’t got the memo. We traveled by minibus from the Sea of Cortez across the Baja Peninsula to Bahia Magdalena in hopes to see grey whales and their young in the calm waters of the bay where they birth and raise their young. Unfortunately, we didn’t get calm waters, and while the roller coaster ride on the locally operated panga boat was a thrill ride itself, we caught only the merest glimpse of the grey whales.

It was a thrill to surf the waves in an open panga and even more thrilling to catch a glimpse of the grey whale in Bahia Magdalena

Video of the merest glimpse of a grey whale courtesy of KC Deitrick

While we didn’t see many grey whales, Magdalena Bay is also home to some incredible bird life. We were lucky to be on board our panga with the resident bird specialist guide, Marith, from our UnCruise and she was shouting out the names of the birds we were seeing over the noise of the engine, wind and waves. We saw oyster catchers, a bald eagle, pelican, great blue heron, great white heron. (I think our photographer, J Klofft, deserves an extra special shout out for getting these shots from aboard a moving panga, including this shot of an oyster catcher tossing and ‘re-catching’ its prey mid air!!)

In the following days we saw much of the wildlife that attracts visitors and gives the Sea of Cortez it’s nicknames, such as the “World’s Aquarium”. We also found the wildlife proved the maxim, "sometimes the wildlife comes to you” One day we took a kayaking excursion and we were joined by this little fella, a grebe with a bright red eyes and funny little feet paddling behind him, who curiously came right up to our kayaking group.

The wildlife comes to UnCruise guide Wilson and a guest in Espiritu Santo

This little grebe, which according to our guide, Wilson, would usually be part of a flotilla of grebes together, decided to come right to us! We nicknamed him Gary the grebe and he followed our flotilla of kayaks all around the bay and even tried to hop onto our kayak while we were stopped looking at the beautiful rock formations. It seemed he wanted to be part of our flock!

Sometimes the wildlife comes to you, and sometimes it doesn’t.

By the end of the week, guests and guides on the Safari Endeavour had compiled quite a comprehensive of flora and fauna (or signs of wildlife) they had seen during our adventures in the Sea of Cortez.

More to come from our UnCruise in the Sea of Cortez and our time in Los Cabos MX, be sure to follow us on Twitter, or follow our FB page for upcoming posts.
