My Travel Advisors and Suppliers Let Me Down!

October 27, 2022

No one is bigger travel evangelist than I am. Part of what I hope to do here is help regular people find travel resources and tips to help people make their trips the best. I felt confident that I’d found a variety of trustworthy travel advisors and providers who could help me put together a seamless trip on my budget, so I could relax with my family and friends and enjoy the trip. Sadly, Covid and recent economic pressures have changed all that. Its unfortunate that as desperately as the travel industry wants us to get back to traveling, at the same time, many of them are struggling to provide the services and products they promise.

I’m still traveling , but recent travel experiences have led me to drastically reconsider how I travel and who I have help me do that. Here are some new rules I’ve adopted for my own travels.

I Don’t Trust The Airlines

I have taken over a dozen flights since November, and not one single one of those flights have gotten off on time without some sort of problem. It’s frustrating as a citizen to see an industry that our tax dollars have bailed out several times over the last few decades; pandemic, financial crisis, 9/11 groundings, and when business picks up, the airlines are never held to account to provide even basic improvements in customer service. Delays, cancellations, changing schedules, broken equipment , lost bags; the list goes on. I can’t imagine any business plan is written that suggests every time your business communicates with it’s customers that the conversation begins with “We’re sorry” or worse, “Thank you for your patience”

I’m losing my patience and a lot of travelers are, some of them behave badly, taking out their anger on customer facing employees who have little control and no authority to change things. Instead of losing my cool, I’m trying to change my behavior to make the miserable experience of flying a little less miserable.

Have a strategy for your flights…be loyal for extra access to basics, pack carefully, build in extra travel time, and be patient!

What I’m Doing Now>>>

  • I’m buying access to loyalty programs or lounges. This can be done with points, or credit cards or cash, but often the cost of buying “status” with an airline can get you dedicated phone lines for rearranging travel. The airlines should provide good service to everyone, but the reality is they don’t and while it’s no guarantee of better treatment, having status might elevate your problem to someone who can help and private lounges may be a more comfortable spot to wait out lengthy delays.

  • I’m adding in the cost of pre night hotel stays in my destination prior to important trips with embarkation dates, like cruises, or important events, like weddings. I don’t count on the airlines getting me to my destination on time, so I build in extra time before a trip to buffer the airlines poor service. Usually, an airport hotel can be an economical choice for a “pre night” stay.

  • I’ll take a train or a bus instead if I can. I used to think that would take “too much time” until I waited 8 hours to take a 45 minute flight from Boston to NYC ( and waited another 6 hours to get back) I nearly missed a Broadway show because I couldn’t count on the airlines to deliver me to my destination.

  • I carry on my bags or keep enough clothes and any essentials in my carry on to live without checked bags should they not arrive at my destination. By using only a carry on, I’ll have flexibility to make changes in flight if there are cancellations or delays.

  • I bring lots of nutritious snacks with me. Planned time for airport meals can disappear with flight delays. Most airlines no longer serve food, and I could be stuck on the tarmac for hours without food or food service even if the airline does serve a meal.

Our travel advisors and the major brand tour company we traveled with to Peru let us down in many ways

Rethink Your Partnerships with Travel Advisors

I booked my travel advisor from one of the premier listings of travel advisors. I booked with them because they and the publishers of vaunted “listing” suggested that when you use a top travel advisor you can count on them to be proactive, to help you untangle problems when you run into trouble. Then Covid hit and the group I booked my recent trip (not my first trip booked with them!) to Peru with before the pandemic became a “fee for service” travel advisory, and I stopped hearing from them. I didn’t get updates from them when I needed to know if our trip would be run as planned during covid times, I couldn’t reach the same advisor, getting passed along from person to person depending on who wasn’t traveling themselves, I recieved documents late and panicky emails telling me to provide information I know they had to travel suppliers at the last minute. This once well organized Travel Consultancy had let me down before I even started my trip. When I got Covid during my trip, they were an even bigger disappointment. It took hours to reach an emergency person, who then asked me to provide them with phone numbers of the travel provider and were unhelpful in acting as an “intermediary” as promised.

What I’m Doing Now>>>

  • More than ever, I’ll rely on a RECENT recommendation from a recent traveler before I trust a travel advisor or famous list of travel agents

  • Trusting my gut…I knew the “top rated” consultancy wasn’t giving me what they promised, but I kept moving forward despite my misgivings, having booked, I was kind of stuck. Most interesting, is I formed a personal relationship with a travel agent who works for a large online travel agency. For a long time I was reluctant to trust that a generalist could help me with a specialized trips, but I learned his professionalism even during the worst of the pandemic travel issues led me to trust that he will be there when I need him. During my Peru trip, which he had no part in planning and made no profit, he saw on Face Book that I was isolated in Peru and reached out to ask how he could help out. I was grateful for that kind of high touch customer care, and I know now that I need to trust my instincts, not reputation, because times change and so will reputations, a personal relationship is more important.

On the road again after a 5 day quarantine in Peru for Covid 19

Im Rethinking Brand Names in Travel

For our trip to Peru we chose a major brand I had long admired despite the high price tags because they had an itinerary that worked for us. This a world recognized travel and photography brand.

The disappointments started before we traveled. We received conflicting information pre trip on everything from itineraries, Covid policies to luggage weight limits. Our pre trip documents were sent to someone else’s address in our town and we only received them because a kind neighbor found us on a town FB page and delivered them to us personally!

The covid policies were nonsensical, and didn’t follow CDC guidelines and caused us a lot of pre trip stress. And they WERE ineffective because by the end of our cruise all but 2 or 3 of 21 passengers had contracted covid and were forced to quarantine for part or all of the trip.

Despite the pre trip troubles, we decided to set aside any negativity and try to embrace the trip itself with a positive attitude. Within minutes of arriving to meet the group, covid procedures were confusing, or ignored and testing was perfunctionary, with the nurse barely touching our nostrils and seemed ineffective (and it turned out to be!)

Once on board our Amazon cruise, we learned our “expert” guides were pulled out of retirement, one of them was physically unable to do many of the excursions. The photography “expert” had taken a 3 day course with the “brand” and was not more knowledgeable than most of the amateur photographers on board with a DSLR camera. The amateurs on board found her unhelpful and she gave lots of tips for using your iphone for photos, while most of the images of wildlife would be impossible to capture with an iphone.

But most disappointing was the expected evening programs with experts consisted mostly of showing documentaries on TV or were shortened presentations so the guides could post the days adventures on social media for the brand’s marketing purposes. This was promoted to us as our guides creating a permanent record of our journey, but the result was that while we were told not use our phones for social media or calls and to be “present” for the trip, our guides were unavailable to us in the moment because THEY were posting content for prospective travelers on social media!

The “brand’s” communication with and treatment of us once I contracted covid was also handled poorly. We were grateful that the Delfin 2, the company that ran the cruise, was in charge of our covid care and handled everything from Dr notes to meals beautifully. But communication from the “brand” was poor including a lack of advance information about rescheduled travel plans.

What Im doing now>>>

  • Just like with travel advisors, “post covid” I’m reevaluating who I can trust to travel with. We traveled with Natural Habitat Adventures during covid and things were handled beautifully with top guides, good communication about changes in itineraries or covid policies. I need to use recent information and trust my instincts if a brand is flailing, and bail out.

  • Document everything that happens so I have the information I need for travel insurance and to make claims with companies that fail to deliver on what I pay for.

  • Letting folks I know about my experiences so they can avoid paying top dollar for experiences that don’t measure up.

The moral of my horror story is plan ahead, be patient, and don’t rely on the “old” brands and rules, things have changed and having a personal relationship with a trusted travel advisor who can help you manage the challenges is more important than reputation or slick marketing. We are in a period of great disruption in travel and we get to vote with our dollars! Good luck out there!

June 26, 2018

What in the Air is Going on Here! (click here for all our tips)

My poor friend John posted a photo of himself on a cross country flight.  He looked miserable...he had hoped to nap in his coach seat from Florida to Seattle, only to find he couldn't reach the window from his window seat!  If you want to avoid John's fate and other horrors of flight in the 21st century...click below to read my tips for making the best of a long haul flight, starting from BEFORE you book you flight!

Did you know you can check every seat on your flight to find the ones with secret problems?  Did you know for .99 cents you can make it sound like you are in a high end spa for 6 hours (even if it doesn't feel like that!)

Checking Seat Guru before booking gave me a "choice" to upgrade my seat to a better location on a recent Aer Lingus Flight

If you have to fly coach like I usually do, you can at least be comfortable! See our tips here

Check it out, I updated this post with new details, and then tell me if you found anything to help you survive "What in the Air is Going on Here?! I'd love to hear your comments!

I recently borrowed the Airpocket, and will probably be buying one myself! It could be a new favorite travel thing!

I recently borrowed the Airpocket, and will probably be buying one myself! It could be a new favorite travel thing!

A Few Of My Favorite Travel Things (and one I regret buying)

April 7, 2016

One of the things about doing a lot of travel, is that after a while, I've discovered some tools that really work for me!  I've also invested in a few things that I wish I hadn't! Here is a review of some of my favorites and at least one that didn't work out as I would have hoped!  As an independent travel blogger, I have not been provide any of my favorite travel items by the manufacturers to review. I bought or borrowed all of these items myself and in the case of the ones I love, use them regularly. In other words, no one paid me or gave me free stuff just to say something nice about it! I'm saying something nice, because it works for ME!

First up is something new I tried that fits all my favorite things!! (click on the title for a link to the site)

Airpocket

Is there anything more disgusting than having to leave things in the seat back pocket of an airplane seat? Here is a place where people leave their used chewing gum and tissues.  Don't even get me started on the "motion discomfort" bags!) And this is the place I'm supposed to leave my water bottle, snacks and eye shades?!  Oh, sure it gets "cleaned" between flights...a crew comes through with rubber gloves and throws out all the trash, and that's that. But if they are wearing rubber gloves to do the job, why would I want to put something that goes into mouth or over my eyes in the same pocket...eww!  So when a friend of a friend recently created the "Airpocket", I loved the idea and had to try it! My friend wanted to support her friend by purchasing one, but doesn't fly much.  When she learned I not only travel but write about it, she happily lent me her Airpocket for a shake down cruise.  I took it along on a flight from Boston to Seattle.

What I Like:

It's sanitary- The Airpocket is made of neoprene, so I could tuck it into the airplane seat back pocket without a worry about whatever germy thing had been there before. I knew I could swab it down after a trip, but it would keep my sleepy time stuff and ipad nice and clean inside it!

It's commodious- It fit far more of my things than I expected. and because it has dividers inside (pockets in a pocket!) It made finding things and returning them easy.

It's easy in and out of a larger bag- (or you can hook it over the handle of a roller bag) This is especially handy when the cabin crew is exhorting everyone to "move it, move it, move it!" I just grabbed the strap and pulled out everything I needed in my seat and could stow the bag quickly.

Below is a video of me packing the Airpocket and you can see how much it fits and how easily it slips in and out of my backpack.

Some things that didn't work for me:

It was mistaken for a purse in the exit row-  I put the Airpocket in the seat back pocket of my "Even More Space" Jet Blue flight and immediately the flight attendant said it had to go underneath.  This won't be an issue unless you are seated in the exit row, but I often am.  But it was easy to pull out of my back pack once we reached altitude due to the nice big strap!

It is a little dark in the interior-  There are some red accents inside, but on my night flight home, I had trouble finding some of my items due to all that black neoprene. I have a bikini with bright yellow neoprene accents, and I think it would make a really cool and functional contrasting interior for the Airpocket.

FitKicks

I recently read about these shoes/slippers in a travel magazine.  Some folks wear them right into the airport, those would be the folks who like this new "barefoot" fitness craze. For someone like myself who is just one tiny step away from orthopedic shoes, I use them as slippers...over my support hose!

What I like:

For a long time, I just used the free slippers I picked up in some of the fancy hotels, but these take so little space in my bag and behave more like a shoe. They also have a real sole, so I can also swab them down after a trip to the airplane lav (If I'm a little squeamish about the seat back pocket, don't even get me started on the floor of the lav!) Until I get a chance to clean them up, I love that I can put them sole to sole, toe to heel, and flip the heels over on toes and any "icky" stuff is isolated from the rest of my things in my bag! (see video below)

RueMe Baggie All

A green RuMe Baggie All hold so much...and even with 3 pockets packs small and light!

A green RuMe Baggie All hold so much...and even with 3 pockets packs small and light!

What I like:

I like everything this company makes!  I use their luggage tags with a unique QR code and I have a couple of their packable C fold bags that I often bring along as spare luggage or to use as a day bag.  If you are a travel junkie like me...their site is dangerous!  It's hard to stop once you see how useful their things are when traveling!

This bag is super thin and light, and features 3 zippered pockets.  I have found I can keep items organized and easy to find by keeping categories of things in each pocket. For instance I use the top pocket for chargers and cables, the second pocket for headphones and the smallest pocket for my reading glasses, so things don't get hopelessly tangled and in the process of untangling, flung across the cabin of the airplane!

Texture App

What I like:

I'll be honest, I was a very early adopter...and 18 months ago I cried when dozens of downloaded magazines "disappeared" when the app "self updated" on hotel wifi hours before a flight from Istanbul to Boston. With no hope of downloading magazines on crummy hotel wifi before the flight, I lost my all my reading material for a long flight.  The reaction on social media was swift and furious, as hundreds of us early adopters sitting in airports ranted about the loss of our downloaded library!  Luckily, they responded quickly, and within a few versions, this is a fabulous app, which keeps your library and downloads quickly!  On one device I can bring any of hundreds of titles, and they don't weigh much or take up space in my carry Depending on your subscription, a library can be shared by a few devices or people in the family.  It's quickly become the only way I read magazines and I can have as many titles as the Hudson News stocks for the price of 3 of them purchased at the airport store. (even all those back issues I've been meaning to catch up on) And best of all, you can read a trashy celebrity magazine and who would know!

Blue Smart Luggage

IMG_5756.JPG
IMG_5755.JPG
IMG_5757.JPG

What I like:

Or, "why I bought it"...I loved the idea of luggage that would charge my electronics, and that it would have an app that would track it's location. It also can weight the contents when you lift it by the handle. I ordered the Bluesmart as part of an Idiegogo campaign.  I should have followed the lead of the venture capitalists who passed on this, thus requiring the designers to crowd fund.

Some things that didn't work for me:

Unfortunately, during my shake down weekend, I discovered a lot of the features either didn't work, didn't matter, or turned out to be downright annoying!  Right off the bat, all those features and space for the battery made for a large carry on bag that doesn't really fit my usual amount of stuff inside.  It's the biggest carry on in my closet and most likely wouldn't "fly" on most European low cost airlines. It fit what I needed for a weekend, but would not have worked for a week or a trip where I needed extra equipment for activities (snorkels or binoculars)

Then many of the features that would be extremely useful in a bag you plan to check, are useless in a carry on bag.  And this can ONLY be a carry on bag because it has a lithium ion battery which is listed as a prohibited checked item on planes.  (see FAA regs here) In addition to the weighing feature being wildly inconsistent, requiring multiple tries to figure out which number was "right", this feature is also on the list of "doesn't matter" features for a carry on bag because I have almost never had to have my carry on weighed (only ATN air to Papeete weighed our carry ons) Generally, only checked baggage is weighed. Although the auto locking, location and notification features worked well with the app, for a carry on bag, it's rare you let any carry on bag out of your sight for even a minute, lest security would descend on it within seconds as an abandoned bag, no GPS needed! A location feature would be very helpful for a checked bag; if it's not on the carousel, you could immediately tell the baggage crew exactly where it is, but that brings us back to the fact that you can't check this bag!

Lastly, the annoying features- I didn't like having to turn on my phone, open the app on my phone, then unlock the bag every time I wanted to quickly access something in it (there is an included emergency key you'd need to carry in case your phone dies) I also found the blue steady and blinking battery indicator lights to be very disruptive in a small hotel room.  It's hard to sleep with the bag charging and flashing blue LED lights all night, and many hotel rooms might not have a solid door to hide it behind at night.

So now this case is now collecting dust in my closet, and at well over $200, it was an expensive mistake. I guess I might use it if I was taking a trip where I expected lots of "land" (not flying) handling of my baggage, such as tours where the bags are left on the bus and transferred to your room each day by hotel staff, but we don't take too many of these kinds of trips, so it's likely to stay in the closet for a while!

Fortunately, many of the investments I've made in travel gadgets have paid off by being useful and making my travels much easier!
